A very special bank in Cantabria

Last year we took a trip to Cantabria. We didn't have many days available, but we made the most of them! We planned to spend a day enjoying Comillas and the surrounding area, and that's exactly what we did.

Nestled in western Cantabria, the municipality of Comillas offers nature, culture, and architecture. Its picturesque architecture delights everyone, with its mountain houses and examples of Catalan Modernism. My husband took us on an architectural tour, one of the many we enjoy in some of the places we visit. We saw the Sobrellano Palace and Pantheon Chapel, the Old Pontifical University, and Gaudí's famous Capricho, which deserves a post of its own.

After spending the whole morning bustling about from very early on, we stopped for an aperitif on a small but delightful terrace overlooking Comillas beach, where we spent a quiet time resting and breathing in the sea air.

Corneja viewpoint, in Ruiloba

Our next destination was on the coast, just a few meters away. We wanted to eat outdoors, and while looking for a place to stop, we came across the Mirador de la Corneja viewpoint in Ruiloba, the neighboring town. As you can see in the photos, it's an absolutely spectacular spot.

That was all it took: a few tables in a meadow overlooking the sea, the Cantabrian produce we had in the trunk, and we had a picnic that was a real feast. For dessert, we had a Torrecartes cheesecake, made with milk from Friesian cows at the Cudaña farm—look into the farm's philosophy, it's worth it—and declared the best in Cantabria a month earlier in the Best Cheese, Cheesecake, and Sobaos of Cantabria competition organized by the Friesian Association of Cantabria. It was fantastic!

A very special bank

Then we sat for quite a while on a very special bench, with spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea. At that moment I thought: I have to share this with my readers, so that when they're in the area, they can recharge their batteries in the best way possible, gazing at the sea.

Accommodation

That night we stayed at the Abba Hotel Comillas Golf. There was very little accommodation available in the area, and we found a great deal for that night. The hotel is very nice. The rooms on the top floor have sloping ceilings, so to enjoy the views you have to stand on a stool. That justifies its lower price. For us, who just wanted to rest and have a shower and breakfast the next day before continuing our journey, it was perfect.
