Mamajuana is so typical in the Dominican Republic that it's even common to prepare it at home. Its benefits are extensive, as the herbs used to make it are generally medicinal.
The uses of mamajuana range from medicinal purposes to prevent all kinds of problems (probably because when you drink a little too much of this liquor, you forget all your troubles), to being a very good aphrodisiac or, depending on the ingredients used, it can be used to promote pregnancy, since the common Dominican belief assumes that mamajuana is really effective for the ovaries.
Making homemade mamajuana: Dominican ingredients and nothing else
All these herbs and small pieces of wood that live inside the square bottle do not wither away overnight and it is said that they can last up to seven years with all their active effects, although you must water them from time to time… but with rum! (vitamin R, as they say on the island).
To revive your mamajuana, whatever use you intend for it, you will need:
- A good Dominican rum, honey, and red wine. To enhance its flavor and use, you can add a few sprigs of grated ginger.
The rest of the ingredients, that is, the aromatic herbs, are already in their original container and probably, if they spoil, you'll only be able to live with the memory of the mamajuana in your mind... or return to the Dominican Republic to pick them up again, if you are able to find them.
With an intense flavor, reddish hue, and very dry texture due to the wood and spices, this Dominican liquor must macerate for a week before being drunk again to relive all those delicious sensations that mamajuana leaves in the body and mind.

The spirits industry hasn't taken over mamajuana, preserving its unique and ancestral essence, protected from large-scale machinery and transportation. It's not exported except through tourism. Mamajuana is a favorite souvenir among travelers, and yet its magic remains, even as knowledge of it spreads worldwide.
