I didn't like herb butter, but my mom's recipe changed everything

Herb butter is an absolute classic among bread spreads – but as is often the case with classics, some people simply pass it by for years.

A visit to my parents radically changed my relationship with herb butter.

It wasn't that long ago that I was visiting my parents – and for dinner, my mom put a bowl of homemade herb butter on the table. Call me crazy, but I'd never really thought about making herb butter myself. For me, it was always something you bought when you needed it for a recipe. Nothing I found interesting enough to make myself just to eat. I always thought the taste was unremarkable – I would never have spread herb butter on a roll, for example. That changed forever that day.

Since then, I could eat herb butter all the time. It's so quick to make; you really only need two or three ingredients. My favorite thing to eat is simply with some fresh bread. A really crusty rose-shaped roll or a rustic baguette, torn into pieces, and then each piece spread with herb butter. That's what culinary heaven feels like to me! Seriously, just writing this is making me hungry. I know what I'm having for dinner tonight.

Ingredients: What you need for the best herb butter

You will need: 1 piece of butter, 2 cloves of garlic, salt and pepper, 1 pack of frozen mixed herbs.

Preparation: How to make quick herb butter

First, the butter needs to soften. If you've bought it straight from the supermarket, you can simply leave it out – it won't be long before you can use it to make herb butter. Another option is to place the butter on a radiator. You can also warm a bowl of hot water and then place it over the butter – the warm water in the bowl will help the butter soften faster.

Then put them in a bowl. Add a generous amount of salt and pepper and mash everything with a fork. Then add the frozen herbs. My mom also used fresh herbs from the garden for her herb butter – but I don't have a herb garden. The frozen version (I use a mix of eight herbs) works just as well, though.

The garlic takes the herb butter to a new level.

Peel the garlic cloves and press them through a garlic press. If you prefer a milder flavor, use just one clove – but if you love garlic, go for three! Seriously, the garlic elevates this herb butter to a whole new level! Once you've added the crushed garlic to the butter, mix everything with a fork until the herbs and garlic are well distributed. Then refrigerate. Tip: Take the finished herb butter out of the refrigerator about ten minutes before serving so it's not too hard and spreads easily. By the way, you can also use this herb butter to make a delicious herb butter baguette. Enjoy!
