Austrian baker sells rye bread for $60
A Graz-based bakery is causing a stir in New York with its $60 price tag for a loaf of bread.
For 52 euros, you can usually get several loaves of bread. Not so in New York. There, for that price, you currently get exactly one: a 1.5-kilogram organic rye loaf from a newly opened boutique bakery run by the traditional Graz-based Auer family.
The boutique bakery "Rye" opened a few days ago in the SoHo district. A loaf of bread sells for 60 US dollars. According to "Falstaff" magazine, the bakery is located in the building on Lafayette Street where David Bowie once lived.
Instead of croissants, baguettes, and other baked goods, "Rye" focuses exclusively on a single product: a 100% rye bread. The recipe was developed specifically for the New York market in collaboration with a master baker from Graz, Austria. "The bread is a huge hit," Tim Auer, son of Martin Auer, the founder of the "Rye" shop, from Austria, told the German Press Agency (dpa).
