Bread: this simple step to take before freezing it will save you a lot of time in the morning

Between waking up, making coffee, and getting ready for the day, waiting for bread to defrost can quickly become annoying. However, a simple, practical habit after returning from the bakery can simplify breakfast. Discover how to prepare your portions, freeze them properly, and reheat them in no time.

The alarm rings, the coffee brews, and you're craving toast. Except your bread is waiting in the freezer. No way to grab just enough for breakfast or wait! To avoid this predicament, a simple little habit is all it takes when putting away your groceries, assures 20 Minutes. A few minutes of preparation means you'll have warm bread without having to wait in front of a frozen baguette.

The right approach starts before freezing.

The trick is to slice the bread before putting it in the freezer. This way you prepare portions that are easy to take out according to your appetite: one slice to go with coffee, two for generous toast, more if the whole family is sitting down to eat.

This method of slicing avoids having to defrost a whole loaf when you only want a small piece. It also helps limit leftovers: you take the amount you need and save the rest for another breakfast. Perfect when your cravings change from one morning to the next!

To get the most out of this method, freeze your bread while it's still fresh, but completely cooled. If it's fresh from the oven, let it cool down first. Putting it in the freezer while it's still warm encourages the formation of ice crystals, which will negatively impact its texture.

Neatly packaged portions, ready to be taken out

Once the bread is sliced, divide the slices into small portions of two or three, for example. Place each portion in a resealable freezer bag, then remove as much air as possible before sealing. This helps prevent the slices from drying out and getting freezer burn.

Don't forget to write the freezing date on the packaging. This way, you can easily identify the oldest portions and use them first. It'll also prevent you from discovering a forgotten bag at the back of a drawer.

From freezer to toaster, without waiting

In the morning, take out the slices you want and place them directly in the toaster, without defrosting them first. That's the whole point of slicing them beforehand: they're already ready for this step. While they're toasting, you can prepare your drink and get out the butter or jam.

Adjust the setting and heating time according to the desired result, and your breakfast will be ready in moments. No more waiting for a large piece of food to defrost.
