Yogurt cake to make with children
8 pers.
Ingredients · Servings 8
- 3 sachets of wheat flour
- 1 sachet of plain yogurt
- 2 sachets of powdered sugar
- 3 Eggs
- 1 sachet Neutral oil
- 1 sachet Baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method · 45 min
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Gather a mixing bowl, a wooden spoon or whisk, a yogurt container (which will be used for measuring), and a cake tin. Lightly grease the tin if necessary. Children can place the utensils on the countertop and pour the ingredients into the mixing bowl while an adult manages the oven and handles the tin if needed.
- Pour the plain yogurt into the mixing bowl, then keep the empty container to easily measure the other ingredients. Explain to the children that this container replaces the scale, making the yogurt cake recipe easy, fun, and perfect to make with kids. An adult can scrape off the lid if needed, while the younger children help with pouring.
- Add two cups of caster sugar to the mixing bowl, then crack in the three eggs one at a time. Also add the teaspoon of vanilla extract. Children can count the sugar cups and help mix gently. For the eggs, it's best if an adult closely supervises or cracks them into a small bowl before adding them to avoid bits of shell.
- Mix the yogurt, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth and well combined. Take your time to stir thoroughly with a spoon or whisk to dissolve the sugar. Children often enjoy this step, as they can mix at their own pace. An adult simply checks that there are no large lumps in the batter and that the sides of the bowl have been scraped.
- Add 3 containers of wheat flour, then the packet of baking powder. Pour them in gradually to avoid lumps and mix after each addition. Children can fill the container, level it with a clean finger or the back of a knife under supervision, and then pour it into the mixing bowl. An adult should ensure that too much flour isn't spilled and help obtain a smooth batter.
- Add one pot of neutral oil, then mix again until the batter is soft, shiny, and smooth. This oil gives the yogurt cake its characteristic moistness. Children can pour the oil slowly while an adult holds the bowl steady. Continue mixing gently to avoid splashing on the work surface.
- Observe the texture of the dough: it should be fluid but not runny, without any visible lumps. If flour remains stuck to the bottom or sides, mix it a little more. This is also a good time to remind you of a few tips to avoid failure: don't pack the flour into the container, carefully follow the measurements, and avoid overworking the dough once it's smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, then lightly smooth the surface with the back of a spoon. Children can help pour if the bowl isn't too heavy, but an adult should hold the pan and ensure the batter is evenly distributed. Do not fill the pan to the top, as the cake will rise during baking thanks to the yeast.
- Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 to 35 minutes. During baking, do not open the oven door too soon to prevent the cake from collapsing. This step should only be performed by an adult. The cake is ready when it is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean or with only a few crumbs.
- Carefully remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before unmolding. An adult should handle this to avoid any risk of burns. Once the cake is placed on a wire rack or plate, the children can admire the finished product and wait until it has cooled enough to be safely eaten.
- Serve this easy yogurt cake as is, or add a touch of indulgence to suit your taste. You can flavor the batter with lemon zest, stir in chocolate chips, or add small pieces of fruit. For a recipe involving children, add these ingredients at the end of the mixing process and let them gently fold them into the batter under adult supervision.
