Pepper burn: how to properly flush your eyes and why folk remedies only do harm

The worst outcome is when first aid based on folk remedies ends: it either adds a second burn to a chemical burn or injures the eye.

Anna Toltaeva, doctor at the Vision ophthalmology center

What methods will only make things worse?

You should never rinse your eyes with tea bags: the tea bags themselves are not sterile, and the pressure will only dissolve the remaining pepper.

A solution of potassium permanganate is dangerous because undissolved crystals can get stuck under the eyelid and lead to scarring.

Butter and sour cream create a film on the surface of the eye, making it more difficult to remove the burning substance.

Baking soda and vinegar will only increase irritation.

How to properly rinse your eyes when they're burned

Instead, use clean, cool water or saline solution. Rinse the eye for at least fifteen minutes, pulling the eyelids back. Anna Toltaeva, a doctor at the Zrenie ophthalmology center, told NEWS.ru about this.

Direct the water from the foreshortening to the inner corner, keeping your eye open and not squinting. Remove the lenses immediately. There's no actual burn, but the cornea and conjunctiva are seriously damaged: after close contact, doctors find erosions.

What foods contain pungent substances?

The following products should be approached with particular caution:

  • Hot pepper, chili, red pepper;
  • Ginger, horseradish, mustard;
  • Black pepper.

Previously, we talked about what to combine turmeric with.
