The 3-Ingredient Dessert I Make Every September (It Never Gets Old)
The end of summer always feels bittersweet to me. I enjoy its laid-back, easygoing days, but by late August, I start looking forward to the first cool morning. I’m sad to see the season end because once fall officially hits, it feels like time speeds up, and suddenly it’s winter and the holidays are in full swing.
As I’m writing this, I’m sitting on my deck in the warm September sun. The trees are just starting to change color, and a light breeze is scattering leaves across the yard. It’s one of those perfectly fleeting in-between moments that will be gone in the blink of an eye.
As the seasons begin to shift, I find myself craving the comfort of baking, but I’m not quite ready to let summer go. These three-ingredient berry turnovers are the perfect answer. The puff pastry feels rich and cozy enough for cooler days, while the berry preserves bring a bright taste of summer to every bite.
Why These Turnovers Are My Favorite Summer-to-Fall Treat
Store-bought berry preserves, puff pastry, and an egg are all I need to whip up this dessert. Recipe developer Candace Nagy uses Bonne Maman preserves, which I love, too. I love not having to make the filling from scratch. The mixed berry preserves do most of the work, bringing the perfect balance of flavor and texture. I can also easily change the filling depending on the season or what I have on hand. I’m already looking forward to trying these with Four Fruits Preserves —a mix of berries, cherries, and redcurrants—as well as plum preserves and even guava.
The puff pastry makes the turnovers taste as if they came straight from a bakery, without leaving the house or standing in line. Anything made with puff pastry automatically feels fancy and sophisticated, and who can resist those light, flaky layers? The recipe also includes an optional glaze to drizzle over the turnovers, but for me, it’s anything but optional. I always have powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract on hand, and the glaze is so simple to make that it’s a no-brainer. But truthfully, the turnovers are just as good without it.
Whether I’m leaning into the last warm days of the season or finally embracing the crisp, cool air, these turnovers are the ultimate low-effort, high-reward treat. They’ve quickly become my favorite when I want something sweet, cozy, and incredibly easy to share.
