Walnut and chocolate kuchen - Pilar Hernández's Chilean Kitchen

This walnut and chocolate kuchen has been on the blog since 2008, but without photos, so I don't think anyone else has made it. This past weekend, we were invited to a luncheon, and I wanted to bring something easy to eat without plates and something sweet—this kuchen was perfect.

Ingredients · Servings 12
  • 115 grams of unsalted butter
  • 200 grams of flour without baking powder
  • 50 grams of granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 150 grams of chopped walnuts
  • 100 grams of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 can (397 grams) of condensed milk
  • 25 grams of butter
Method · PT-497396H58M44S
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C or 350F.
  2. Prepare a 20 × 20 cm round or square pan, cover the bottom with parchment paper or aluminum foil to make it easy to unmold.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the butter with a fork until creamy. Add the sugar and continue beating. Add the egg and beat well until fully incorporated. Add the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix initially with the fork, then with your hands until a soft dough forms.
  4. Pour the batter into the pan and spread it with damp fingers. Form an even layer and bake for 12-15 minutes until lightly golden.
  5. In a small saucepan over low heat, place the walnuts and butter. Once the butter has melted, add the condensed milk and chocolate chips. Cook until the chocolate is melted.
  6. Pour the chocolate and nut mixture over the freshly baked dough and cover the mold with aluminum foil.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes, carefully remove from the oven and carefully peel off the foil. Bake for another 10-13 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Let cool completely on a wire rack, refrigerate before cutting and serving.

Note that it's best to refrigerate it before cutting it, so do it in the morning if you want to serve it in the afternoon.
