Poutine in the style of onion soup

Portions 4

Get ready to discover an amazing fusion of two classics: poutine and onion soup. To make this onion soup-style poutine, we start with a bag of crispy frozen fries, which we then smother with a rich gravy made from a packet of onion soup mix and a splash of white wine. A little cornstarch makes all the difference in thickening the gravy and giving it the perfect texture. Next, we add a generous portion of cheese curds, which melt slightly in the hot gravy, and finish with grated Gruyère cheese. The result: a comforting, melty, and incredibly flavorful dish!

Ingredients

1 bag of frozen fries (900g)

1 sachet of onion soup mix (55g)

80 ml (1/3 cup) of white wine

1 bag of cheese curds (200g)

500 ml (2 cups) of grated Gruyère cheese

Also plan for:

45 ml (3 tbsp) cornstarch

Optional:

1.25 ml (1/4 tsp) dried thyme

Steps

Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).

Spread the fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake according to the package directions.

In a saucepan, combine the onion soup mix with the cornstarch and, if desired, the thyme. Pour in the white wine and 500 ml (2 cups) of water. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly.

Divide the fries among four ovenproof bowls. Top with cheese curds and drizzle with onion soup sauce. Cover with Gruyère cheese.

Place the plates on a baking sheet.

Set the oven to the "broil" position and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the cheese is golden brown.
