3-Ingredient Caipirinha Cocktail Recipe

Any drink that both Anthony Bourdain and Martha Stewart have described as an all-time favorite just has to be good, and the Caipirinha does not disappoint.

Ingredients · Servings 1
  • 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon superfine sugar (or granulated sugar)
  • 2 ounces cachaça
Method · 6 min
  1. Use a sharp knife to cut the ends off of the lime.
  2. Cut the lime in half vertically, then cut each half into 3 wedges.
  3. Cut the white pith out of the center of each wedge.
  4. Place the limes in a cocktail shaker along with the sugar.
  5. Muddle to break up the limes.
  6. Fill the shaker ⅔ of the way with ice.
  7. Add the cachaça.
  8. Shake for 15 seconds, or until the shaker is frosty.
  9. Strain the cocktail out into a rocks glass.
  10. Garnish the cocktail with a lime slice, if desired, and serve.

Cachaça, a spirit only produced in Brazil, is the star of any good Caipirinha. It has a uniquely grassy flavor profile, which makes it a rather refreshing pairing with fresh lime juice. It's a nice swap if you're used to rum- or tequila-based cocktails. Sugar rounds out any intense citrus or grassy notes, resulting in a smooth, surprisingly complex drink, and one that you truly need only three total ingredients to make and enjoy.

Gather the 3 ingredients for this Caipirinha cocktail recipe

Vibrant, punchy, and refreshing, a good Caipirinha starts with the cachaça. You should be able to find cachaça at most liquor stores, and while it may be slightly pricier than your average bottle, it's worth the investment. Along with liquor, you'll need a fresh lime or two (don't even consider swapping it for bottled lime juice), and superfine sugar. The superfine sugar isn't a deal breaker. If you have standard granulated sugar, you can use that instead. Just take care to muddle the limes and sugar thoroughly to keep the drink from having granules of sugar running through. Other than that, some ice for shaking and serving is all you'll need.

Pour the cocktail out into a rocks glass.
