In Rome, a terrace in the heart of the city for relaxed aperitifs and beautiful sunsets
Located in the heart of Rome, Terrazza Nainer is one of the terraces that truly comes alive in the warmer months, offering relaxed aperitifs and a dreamy view of the city.
In Rome, there's no summer without terraces (which, let's face it, is now a concept that applies almost year-round). From panoramic hotel rooftops to cocktail bars with a view, venues built around sunsets and the perfect photo. Yet, along with all the options, a certain sense of uniformity has also spread: places that are often very beautiful, but also a bit stiff, built more around the idea of an "experience" than the spontaneity of a normal evening.
An informal address among the many terraces of Rome
This is why today we need terraces that are easier to enjoy. Ones where you can go without planning your evening in advance, simply stopping for a drink, a long aperitivo, or a bite to eat without having to turn everything into a dinner party. Terrazza Nainer, the rooftop of Palazzo Nainer between Via del Babuino and Piazza del Popolo, fits right in with this trend. With spring approaching, it inevitably returns to the radar of Roman outings. The view, of course, is a major draw: the rooftops of the historic center, Villa Borghese, the sunset light that never fails to shine in these parts. But that's not the only point here.
The terrace, spread across multiple levels, maintains a rather relaxed atmosphere. The overall effect is elegant, but without over-the-top or the aesthetic of a rooftop built just for photography. The tables are well-spaced, the spaces breathe, and the overall impression is closer to that of a place to truly linger than a "one-time getaway" venue. This is also because the format is deliberately fluid: aperitif, cocktails, something to eat, and after-dinner drinks. Giving everyone the opportunity to create their evening as they wish.
What to eat and drink at Terrazza Nainer in Rome
And in fact, the food offerings follow exactly this logic. No complicated menus: here, the focus is primarily on sharing and a series of immediate tastings. There are beef meatballs in tomato sauce with pecorino cheese and croutons (15 euros), fried pizza zeppole with marinara sauce (12), steamed bao with pulled pork, cucumbers, and BBQ sauce (2 pieces 16 euros), or warm focaccia with porchetta d'Ariccia and truffle mayonnaise (14), which inevitably give a nod to a very Roman imagery. Then there's hummus, guacamole, a selection of cured meats and cheeses, rosemary focaccia, battered courgette flowers with mozzarella and anchovies: simple dishes, designed more to accompany the table than to transform the terrace into a real restaurant.
The drinks section, managed by bar manager Francis Cortez, also follows a very straightforward path. The menu alternates seasonal signature cocktails (20), classic cocktails and Champagne cocktails (25) without, however, getting too caught up in ultra-technical mixology. And this approach is also well reflected in the crowd: different tables, groups, couples, people who stop by just for a drink and others who stay the whole evening.
More than a rooftop spot for special occasions, Terrazza Nainer feels like a place attempting to fit into the normal flow of Roman summer outings. And this is probably the most interesting aspect of a city that now boasts panoramic terraces everywhere: not so much the view itself, but the way these spaces manage—or fail—to become part of everyday life.
