Homemade caramelized onions: soft, golden and with a deep flavor

Caramelized onions are one of those patient preparations that transform a common ingredient into something much more interesting.

Ingredients · Servings 4
  • 3 large onions
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar (white)
  • Shall
  • Pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
Method · 45 min
  1. Peel the onions, cut them in half and slice them into thin, even slices.
  2. Heat the pan over medium heat, add the butter and let it melt. Stir in the oil.
  3. Add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Mix well.
  4. Let it cook over medium-low heat until it takes on color and begins to caramelize. This process can take between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on the thickness of the slices.
  5. Pour in the balsamic vinegar and scrape the bottom of the pan to release the juices. Cook for a few more minutes until it reduces and you get a syrupy texture.
  6. And that's it! A perfect onion to accompany meats or to add a touch of sweetness to a sandwich or a potato omelet.
