Homemade caramelized onions: soft, golden and with a deep flavor
Caramelized onions are one of those patient preparations that transform a common ingredient into something much more interesting.
Ingredients · Servings 4
- 3 large onions
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of sugar (white)
- Shall
- Pepper
- 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
Method · 45 min
- Peel the onions, cut them in half and slice them into thin, even slices.
- Heat the pan over medium heat, add the butter and let it melt. Stir in the oil.
- Add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Mix well.
- Let it cook over medium-low heat until it takes on color and begins to caramelize. This process can take between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on the thickness of the slices.
- Pour in the balsamic vinegar and scrape the bottom of the pan to release the juices. Cook for a few more minutes until it reduces and you get a syrupy texture.
- And that's it! A perfect onion to accompany meats or to add a touch of sweetness to a sandwich or a potato omelet.
