Tofu general tao
The name might sound a bit unusual, but the idea is quite simple: crispy tofu with a sticky sauce and a delicious balance of sweet, salty, and spicy. That's essentially the General Tao tofu recipe.
Ingredients · Servings 4
- 450 g of firm tofu
- 30 g of cornstarch (cornflour)
- 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil (sunflower, grapeseed or peanut)
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons of ketchup
- 1 teaspoon of sriracha sauce
- 2 small spring onions (white and green parts)
- 180 ml of vegetable broth
Method · 20 min
- We drain the tofu and cut it into regular-sized cubes.
- We put the tofu cubes in a salad bowl, add the cornstarch and mix carefully until they are well coated on all sides.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the tofu over medium-high heat until crispy. Add a little more oil if necessary.
- Add the garlic, ginger, maple syrup, soy sauce, ketchup, sriracha, most of the finely chopped scallions, and the broth. Mix well to coat the tofu.
- Cook over low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces, thickens, and coats the tofu cubes well.
- We serve the General Tao tofu with rice and vegetables, and finish with some thinly sliced green onion rings. And that's it!
