Chef Kwame Onwuachi Is Opening a Patty Stand at Citi Field

Lauded celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi is opening a new fast-casual sports stand this spring. Patty Palace will be found inside the Mets baseball stadium Citi Field in Queens during the team’s first home game on Friday, April 4.

The menu focuses on a chicken patty. The flaky pastry is filled with curried chicken and served within coco bread that is topped with jerk barbecue seasoning, green sauce and a ginger-cabbage slaw. Onwuachi tells Eater he plans on opening a food truck version at the Lincoln Center Plaza (where his restaurant Tatiana is) in the summer starting in June. Future patties will include a a vegetarian mushroom version and — one day, perhaps — a take on the Krabby Patty.

Back in 2017, Onwuachi mentioned he wanted to open a fast-casual restaurant in D.C. Around the same year, he had also dabbled in cooking at Ethiopian food hall stall Gorsha and ran his own food hall stand Philly Wing Fry, where he made dry-aged ribeye-based cheesesteaks.

Onwuachi hinted that he was working on a new spot called Patty Palace, mentioned in a New York Times article in November 2024. He previewed its food at Black culture conference CultureCon in 2023.

Onwuachi’s culinary through line has involved his delving into Black food roots by exploring African diaspora cuisines, a reflection of his Bronx upbringing and his Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Creole heritages. His first restaurant was the short-lived D.C. tasting menu spot Shaw Bijou. After it closed, he was the executive chef of Afro Caribbean fine-dining restaurant Kith/Kin, but he left in 2020, and it closed quickly afterwards.

In New York City, he opened hot high-end restaurant Tatiana in New York at Lincoln Center in 2022; followed by Afro-Caribbean hotel restaurant Dōgon in D.C. in 2024.

Earlier this year, Onwuachi explored cooking at another sports venue, the private Crown Club at Barclays Center, where he prepared dishes from the menu at Tatiana. Eater has reached out to the chef’s team for clarification on whether there will be future partnerships at the arena.
