The Best Dishes Eater Dallas Ate in August

A brunch sammie, stone fruit salad, and the best cornbread in town delighted this month.

6109 Berkshire Ln.

Working through the courses at this omakase service in a yakitori was a treat, but choosing just one course to highlight was tough. This one was a favorite, highlighting what executive chef Masayuki Otaka does, bringing in Japanese ingredients and some of Texas’s finest. Here he combined a fried piece of hamo (Japanese pike that is a summer fish) with scored eggplant and Hatch chiles, both grilled and coated in a sauce. They came together for a great bite.

500 Crescent Ct., Suite 160

An ongoing hunt for the perfect brunch brought me to this Uptown spot to try some new cocktails, where I found that the DTF drink, served in a coupe and made with vodka, St. Germain, Daou rosé, and strawberries, has a lot of wow-factor. This brunch sandwich, a take on a Croque Madame, impressed me. The toast was softer and less buttery than the usual presentation, but the ingredients (roasted tomato, smoked bacon, melted cheese, bechamel, and a sunny side-up egg on toasted sourdough) came together for that sought-after combination of all the best brunch bites.

2386 Victory Park Ln.

A lovely dinner at this spot yielded numerous tasty plates, but I left dreaming about (and, the next day, eating more of) the excellent cornbread topped with honey butter and the fried squash blossoms that appear this time of the season.

380 Melba St.

An unplanned stop at this Bishop Arts restaurant yielded extraordinarily accommodating and kind service for our party and several amazing dishes. This grilled shrimp and avocado salad with mango, stone fruit, fried shallots, and a bed of coconut, lime, and chili was a major hit. Get it before it comes off the summer menu.
