Chefs' favorite vacation spots
Where do chefs like Ángel León, Begoña Rodrigo, Elena Arzak, Joan Roca, and Pepe Solla have breakfast, lunch, and dinner when they go on vacation?
For Begoña Rodrigo, a good day starts with an avocado toast or a calamari sandwich at Tres14, on La Patacona beach (Valencia); Ángel León opts for the pringá and chicharrones roll at Casa Vicente Los Pepes in El Puerto de Santa María; Diego Guerrero (DSTAgE) has an aperitif with the San Isidro salad at Rambal, in Madrid, at the time when he would coincide with Elena Arzak at El Café de la Concha, in the heart of San Sebastián bay.
Andoni Luis Aduriz goes to the La Cabaña snack bar to eat sardines by the lighthouse, Joan Roca loves the local artisan cheeses of Formaticum, in Girona; Martina Puigvert, from Les Cols, never misses the sweets of Pastissería Ferrer (Olot), and the Fratelli Figurato pizzeria, in Madrid, is the favorite of Paco Roncero, from the restaurant that bears his name in the capital, and of Toño Pérez, from Atrio in Cáceres.
At A Casa Pequena, the furancho frequented by Pepe Solla, they only serve the wine they make themselves and they have a perfect terrace for Galician nights.
“Los Soletes seems like a very innovative idea to me because, from a gastronomic standpoint, these are very fresh, original, and affordable places, places we ourselves frequent,” says Elena Arzak. Ángel León agrees: “Los Soletes is an award in a sector that is often overlooked, but it's the one that feeds us every day in this country. Everyday places, wonderful neighborhood spots, unexpected places where there's a kitchen made with love, a family or team that loves their work, at an affordable price for a public that can enjoy it.”
Brothers Javier and Sergio Torres (Cocina Hermanos Torres) enjoy themselves at the La Gabia dels Mussols beach bar in Sant Feliu de Guixols (Barcelona); Alberto Ferruz, from BonAmb, goes to La Cantina de Jávea, in the port, for the best product, and El Cazurro de Liencres is one of the favorite places of Jesús Sánchez (El Cenador de Amós).
Ice cream shops are a must.
Ice cream has proven to be a weakness for chefs, who have not hesitated to detail their favorites: Paco Morales, of 'Noor' (3 Repsol Guide Suns), likes the stracciatella ice cream from BuonisssimoGelato, in Córdoba; Juan Carlos Padrón, of El Rincón de Juan Carlos (3 Repsol Guide Suns), sometimes ends his beach days with a pistachio ice cream from Picacho, in El Médano (Tenerife), and from the Xixovic ice cream parlor, in Vic (Barcelona), Nandu Jubany, of Can Jubany (3 Repsol Guide Suns), highlights the biscuit glacée.
