Sausage and mash tastes better with this easy 3-step homemade gravy

Transform your sausage and mash with this easy homemade gravy recipe — richer, smoother and even better than Bisto.

“It's hard to explain just how deliciously moreish this gravy is - it's not just a condiment but equal to whatever you're smothering it over - I could honestly eat it by the spoonful.”

Autumn is progressing, bringing with it colder and darker evenings. When there's a chill in the air, people seek out comfort food - and what could be better than sausages and mash?

It's the ideal, straightforward supper and a genuine British staple. However, in my view, what takes it from good to exceptional is the gravy.

I'm aware many people prefer Bisto for their gravy - indeed my partner is amongst them - but I assure you this gravy is far superior.

I prepared this gravy last night, using a recipe from RecipeTinEats, and even my Bisto-devoted boyfriend was won over. It requires slightly more effort, but is absolutely worth every moment.

It's not only me who adores it - comments on the recipe liken it to the renowned KFC gravy and describe it as the perfect accompaniment.

Another said: "This recipe is the easiest, most flavourful gravy that I've had in such a long time."

Ingredients

  • One chicken stock cube
  • One beef stock cube
  • Two and a quarter cups of boiling water.
  • Four tbsp butter
  • Four tbsp flour

Method

Place your stock cubes into a jug with the boiling water and combine.

In a small saucepan, melt your butter and incorporate your flour, whisking for several minutes as the flour cooks.

Add half your stock to the mixture along with the garlic and onion powder and whisk. Add the remaining half and continue whisking constantly until thickened.
