Can you guess India’s Milk Capital? Here’s why this Gujarat city earned the title

Some Indian cities are famous for monuments, some for food, and others for industries that shaped the country. Then there is , a city in Gujarat whose identity is closely tied to something found in nearly every Indian kitchen: milk.

But the nickname comes with a fascinating history involving growers, cooperatives, Amul and one of India's biggest agricultural transformations. Anand emerged as an weighty center of India's dairy cooperative movement in the 20th century.

The cooperative approach brought milk makers together and created a more organized system for collecting and marketing their produce. This changed the relationship between dairy producers and the marketplace.

Instead of working individually, growers could participate in a collective system designed around their common interests. Anand is also the birthplace of the cooperative movement associated with Amul, one of India's most recognizable dairy brands.

The brand widened from a producers' cooperative in Gujarat and eventually expanded its range far beyond milk. Amul products today include staples such as butter, cheese, curd and other dairy items.

The growth of the cooperative demonstrated how a local initiative could develop into a nationwide business while keeping milk makers at the center of the system. The city's history took on national significance during India's White Revolution, a period of rapid development in the country's dairy trade.

The movement sought to gain milk availability while building stronger systems for collecting, processing and distributing dairy produce. Anand became an weighty base for this effort, with its cooperative model serving as an example for dairy development in other parts of India. Another name closely connected with Anand is Dr Verghese Kurien, widely recognized as the Father of India's White Revolution.

Kurien worked from Anand and played a central role in developing the cooperative dairy model. His contribution helped take the ideas being implemented in Gujarat and give them a much wider national reach.

Anand's significance did not end with the expansion of dairy cooperatives. The city went on to develop institutions focused on areas such as dairy science, rural management and agricultural development.

Among the organizations associated with Anand is the National Dairy Development Board, which played a principal role in India's dairy development programs. The city is also home to the Institute of Rural Management Anand, reflecting its wider connection with rural development and cooperative management.
