Halloween: These ultra-cute and festive potatoes are a must-try this year

50 stunning side dishes to elevate a roast chicken without breaking the bank

on 28/09/2026

Halloween is just around the corner, and on TikTok, potatoes are being transformed into absolutely irresistible ghosts and pumpkins. A viral video from @theaveragehousewife_ shows how to turn a few tubers into a fun and spooky side dish that makes you want to take a bite. Easy to prepare, these creative bites are a hit as an appetizer, for dinner, or as a quick snack. Their secret? An adorable look, lots of simplicity, and a melt-in-your-mouth crispy texture. It's impossible to resist these little golden ghosts, perfect for sharing throughout the Halloween season.

This recipe is a hit because it combines a festive look with simplicity and accessibility: potatoes or sweet potatoes cut into ghosts and pumpkins using cookie cutters create an instant "wow" effect. Easy to prepare on a baking sheet, these bites appeal to both children and adults, transforming a simple side dish into a fun, crispy-on-the-outside, chewy Halloween snack, perfect for appetizers, dinner, or an afternoon treat.

Wash and cut thick slices of potato or sweet potato. Use cookie cutters to shape ghosts and pumpkins, tapping them if necessary. Toss the shapes with olive oil and seasonings, then arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 220°C (425°F) and turn halfway through until the ghosts are golden brown and the pumpkins are tender and crispy.

Choose yellow-fleshed potatoes such as Yukon Gold or sweet potatoes (or other varieties indicated), olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian herbs or paprika. Have ghost and pumpkin cookie cutters ready, a mallet or the flat of a knife for punching holes, a wide straw for the eyes (optional), and parchment paper or a non-stick baking sheet. Serve with ketchup, hot honey, or avocado ranch, as desired.

Customize the toppings and seasonings (paprika, chili, spicy ketchup, or avocado "slime") or carve faces into whole potatoes for a "shrunken heads" version. You can also poach mashed potatoes for realistic ghosts and insert seeds for eyes before baking. Store the potatoes in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and reheat them in the oven or air fryer to restore their crispness.
