Bavarian specialties

Anyone who enjoys hearty cuisine is guaranteed to love Bavarian specialties! Recipes for savory meat dishes, traditional side dishes, and rich desserts are now celebrated throughout the country – indeed, throughout the world.

Bavarian specialties have a long tradition and are enjoyed with great pleasure, especially during Oktoberfest. Hearty roasts, delicious salads, soups, and rich sweet desserts – in our gallery you'll discover the best recipes for southern German home cooking.

Bavarian specialties - hearty classics

No half measures – hearty and robust is our favorite South German cuisine. Whether in the state capital Munich, in the Allgäu region, in Upper Bavaria, or in Swabia – meat is rarely absent from main courses. Roast pork with crackling, meatloaf, and pork knuckle are true classics. Typical side dishes include sauerkraut, potato salad, red cabbage, bread dumplings, spaetzle, or Schuxen, a savory fried pastry.

Typical Bavarian: The snack

A very typical Bavarian specialty is the so-called Brotzeit. This is served as a snack, typically on wooden boards in beer gardens, and usually consists of lye-based baked goods such as pretzels or farmer's bread with various cold toppings like cold cuts, cheese, Obazda (a Bavarian cheese spread), crackling lard, radishes, small radishes, and often a wheat beer. Occasionally, warm Bavarian specialties, such as the famous Weißwurst (white sausage) with sweet mustard, or lukewarm Leberkäse (a type of meatloaf), are served with the Brotzeit.

Sweet Bavarian recipes

Sweet pastries are especially popular in Bavarian cuisine, which is why they are often served as a main course. But yeast dumplings, bread pudding, sweet rolls, and apple fritters also make delicious desserts. And for coffee and cake, the classic plum cake or the Prinzregententorte are definitely worth trying!

Bavarian specialties as souvenirs

Anyone wanting to bring a piece of Bavaria home after their holiday can simply try out our fantastic recipes, or bring back Bavarian specialties as souvenirs for themselves and their loved ones. A gingerbread heart from Oktoberfest is a great choice, but Bavarian wheat beer, sweet mustard, and well-packaged Bavarian sausages and cheeses also make excellent culinary gifts.
