Fried cinnamon roll skewers with banana and vanilla cream

When fresh fruit alone isn't enough and you're craving something warm, skewered pastries from the pan are a great option. The combination of soft fruit and buttery batter takes the idea of classic French toast and translates it into an uncomplicated finger food.

Warm cinnamon roll banana skewers: the sweet snack for coziness

The base for these cinnamon roll and banana skewers is a true classic from northern Germany. Franzbrötchen (cinnamon rolls) naturally possess everything a good pastry needs. The rich puff pastry contains butter, which melts when heated, ensuring that the cut surfaces toast evenly to a golden brown in the pan. At the same time, the typical cinnamon and sugar filling caramelizes, forming a fine, crispy layer around the soft crumb. Fresh banana slices are alternately threaded onto the wooden skewers along with the pastry pieces.

Chopped walnuts, with their slightly bitter aroma, go perfectly with the sweet cinnamon roll and banana skewers, giving the dish a pleasant crunch. If you can't find cinnamon rolls at the bakery, the recipe can easily be adapted. Classic cinnamon rolls made with yeast dough work just as well and offer a similar flavor profile. If you're really short on time, simply use regular milk rolls.

A cool, creamy contrast complements the warm pan-fried snack perfectly. Whipped vanilla cream rounds off the dish and adds moisture to the plate. To break up the rich sweetness of the batter and banana, a touch of orange zest gives the cream a fruity dimension. The essential oils from the citrus peel traditionally harmonize beautifully with warm spices like cinnamon, elevating the flavor to a fresher level.

Timing is everything when serving these warm cinnamon roll and banana skewers. Take the skewers straight from the pan and arrange them quickly while the caramelized sugar is still soft and the pastry inside is steaming. A final sprinkle of cinnamon sugar, added at the very last second, creates an intense aroma that immediately fills the air.
