Frozen chocolates, Savory's chomp style - Pilar Hernández's Chilean Kitchen
When my now-husband and I were young, one of our favorite things to do in the evening was watch a movie while eating Savory Chomps, or ice cream bonbons. Back then, they had vanilla ice cream filling and chocolate filling; I don't know what flavors they have now, but I hope they still sell them.
Ingredients · Servings 25
- 2 cups of ice cream of your choice
- 180 grams of chopped couverture chocolate, I used semi-sweet
- 3 tablespoons of butter in small pieces or 3 tablespoons of unflavored vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of corn syrup (or maple syrup or palm honey)
- crushed cookies, chopped peanuts, shredded coconut, colored sprinkles, whatever you want to decorate with

- Chill a tray lined with parchment paper in the freezer.
- Boil water and place it in a cup and put the ice cream scoop inside to heat it up.
- Remove the ice cream from the freezer and the cold tray. Using a warm spoon, scoop out balls of ice cream and place them on the cold tray.
- Return the tray to the freezer and let them freeze completely. About 2 hours.
- Place the chopped chocolate, butter or oil and syrup in a bowl and melt in a double boiler (over a pot of gently boiling water, without the bowl touching the water) stirring constantly until completely melted.
- Working quickly with two spoons or forks, place each scoop of ice cream in the chocolate, rotate them, let the excess chocolate drip off, and place them back on the chilled tray. Sprinkle with your desired toppings.
- Freeze until very hard, about 4 hours or overnight.
- Take out of the freezer and use scissors to trim off any excess chocolate to make them look nicer; there is always a little bit left around the base.
- Keep frozen until ready to serve.
This recipe requires a little patience and organization, as well as freezer space to put a tray of chocolates, but the great thing is that you can personalize them however you want and can make them weeks in advance.
Which of the old-fashioned ice creams is your favorite?
Nifty, Cremino, Centella, Cola de Tigre, Crocanty, and Chocolito.
