Sangria and summer

A classic drink during these summer months, when the heat is intense. Deeply rooted in our tradition, sangria is a combination that enjoys international fame.

The worst red wines, to which they add third-rate liquors, large quantities of fruit to mask the problem, and lots of ice to make it "nice and cold"—which, after all, is the whole point. And when the establishment in question doesn't want to put in too much effort, they simply use pre-packaged beers, either bottled or, even worse, in tetra packs.

How far removed from the authentic sangrias we used to drink years ago, which gradually disappeared until they became just a memory of another time. Sangria has been replaced by tinto de verano, which is probably the most popular summer drink these days.

The combination of red wine and soda water isn't exactly new. Those of us with gray hair remember it as a common feature of summer family meals many years ago. Often, what was mixed with the wine was seltzer water, another element that has almost completely disappeared, becoming an antique piece used to decorate modern bars.

This tinto de verano (red wine and lemonade) has become a very popular drink in recent years, its consumption boosted by a major soft drink brand that even sells it ready-made so the consumer doesn't even have to bother mixing it. The truth is, it's a refreshing and easy-to-make drink. All you need is a large glass or cup, plenty of ice, a splash of red wine, and plenty of soda. And if you want something more sophisticated, add a slice of lemon. A perfect combination for the hottest days.

Note that tinto de verano is not sangria, although many people confuse the terms. What's clear is that between a bad sangria and a simple tinto de verano, I prefer the latter. By the way, even if you mix it with soda water, using a good wine will make it much better.
