Puff pastry spiders shaped like sausages

Here's a fun and festive idea that will appeal to both children and adults at a Halloween party: puff pastry sausage spiders! Made with Lesters Original Hot Dog Sausages, they combine simplicity with a guilty pleasure.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of Lesters Original Hot Dog Sausages
  • 1 roll of croissant dough (Pillsbury type) weighing 226g
  • 48 slices of black or green olives
  • 125 ml (1/2 cup) of ketchup
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) of yellow mustard

Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 205 °C (400 °F).
  • Cut the sausages in half lengthwise, then cut each half-sausage into two pieces.
  • Using the tip of a knife, make three 3-4 cm (1 1/4 in to 1 2/3 in) long incisions at the ends of the sausage pieces, making sure to keep the center of the pieces intact.
  • On the work surface, unroll the roll of croissant dough. Using your fingers, press along the dotted lines to seal the dough triangles and form a rectangle. Cut the dough into 24 strips approximately 2 cm (3/4 in) wide and 5 cm (2 in) long.
  • Wrap a strip of dough around the center of each piece of sausage, then pinch to seal the dough.
  • Place the bites on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down. Decorate each bite with two olive slices to form eyes.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage "legs" are crispy and curved.
  • Place the ketchup in a bowl, then create a spiderweb effect with the mustard. Serve with the spiders.
