Goodbye to Sylkar's tortillas
Sylkar's tortillas, with or without onions, whether enjoyed at their shop on Madrid's Espronceda Street or to take away, have brought much joy. Their juiciness, the perfectly fried potatoes, and the quality of the eggs made them all contribute to their success.
Brothers Alfredo and Carmen García had already announced that, after more than 50 years at the helm of this iconic establishment, they were retiring without a successor. And so it has been, leaving us bereft not only of tortillas: croquettes, Russian salad, meatballs, oxtail stew, and some truly memorable French toast. Both this dessert and the tortillas had garnered numerous awards.
We will also miss the hearty stews they offered every day, from lentils to Madrid stew or fabada.
"Thank you for joining us for over 50 years in this small shop where stories, conversations, laughter, breakfasts, the return from work, first dates, and reunions with friends have all taken place... Today, Sylkar closes its doors and says goodbye. After much thought, its owners are ready to enjoy their retirement and will remember their customers forever. A heartfelt thank you to our loyal customers, tourists, seniors, and children... Thank you to Vitoria, Mercedes, Judith, Andrea, Rosa... for cooking such delicious food and serving us so well. We are very confident that this little café at Calle Espronceda, nº 17 will soon shine again," they posted on their social media.
