Baked Apple Slices

Baked apple slices are one of those easy desserts that taste like apple pie without the work of making a pie. Fresh apples are sliced, tossed with honey, cinnamon, butter, and nuts, then baked until tender and coated in a delicious buttery sauce.

Ingredients · Servings 6
  • 5-6 Large apples (cored and sliced)
  • 4 Tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1/3 - 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup mixed nuts
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
Method · 20 min
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In an oven safe baking dish combine melted butter, honey, cinnamon and nuts.
  3. Mix everything well to distribute honey evenly.
  4. Add sliced apples to the pan and mix everything well to coat apple slices.
  5. Bake in the center of your oven for 20-25 minutes until fork tender.
  6. Serve hot.

These are so good fresh out of the oven. Warm, buttery apple slices with cinnamon, honey, and nuts. Sink your teeth into each sweet or tangy bite or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a fun treat. And if you can believe it, they are just as good the next day as the apples soak in the honey deliciousness. Unbelievably amazing in your morning yogurt or oatmeal.

Baked Apple Slices

This baked apples recipe delivers all the cozy, classic flavors of apple pie without the hassle of making a crust. Just slice the apples, toss with the remaining ingredients, and bake until perfectly tender. An easy treat that comes together in no time.

I like how this is a naturally sweetened, wholesome treat with a comforting flavor profile. Enjoy them as a warm dessert, spoon them over morning oatmeal or yogurt, or keep them on hand for a quick afternoon snack.

Ingredient Notes / Variations

  • Fresh apples: I like using a mix of tart and sweet apples.
  • Honey for a natural sweetener; you can also use maple syrup with a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Unsalted butter.
  • Cinnamon, you try a mix of warm spices like cloves and nutmeg.
  • Mixed nuts of choice.

Best apples for baking

You can use almost any apple for this recipe. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Gala, or Fuji because they bake nicely while still giving you a good balance of flavor and texture.

Granny Smith adds a little tartness that works beautifully with the honey and cinnamon, while Honeycrisp and Pink Lady bring a nice sweet tart flavor. Gala and Fuji are naturally sweeter and become soft and juicy as they bake.

My favorite is actually a mix of apples. Combining a tart variety like Granny Smith with a sweeter apple gives you a little of everything in each bite.

What can I serve with baked apple slices?

These apples are delicious on their own, but they are even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a spoonful of Chantilly cream, or a little Greek yogurt. They also make a cozy topping for oatmeal, pancakes, or waffles.

How thick should I slice the apples?

Aim for slices that are about ¼ inch thick. Try to keep them as evenly sliced as possible so they cook at the same rate without some pieces becoming too soft while others are still firm.

Can I make baked apple slices without sugar?

Yes. This recipe uses honey to naturally sweeten the apples instead of granulated sugar. The apples become tender and caramelized in the oven, and the cinnamon brings out their natural sweetness. It can also be made without sweetener at all if this is what you like.

Can I make baked apple slices ahead of time?

Yes. You can bake them ahead and gently reheat them when you're ready to serve. They are especially good warm, when the apples are tender and the cinnamon-honey flavors are at their best.

How do I store leftover baked apple slices?

Let the apples cool, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat them gently in the microwave or in the oven until warmed through.
