Apple delays new streaming and speaker hardware for a revised voice assistant
Apple has finalized the physical architecture of its next streaming device and smart speaker but withheld release to synchronize them with a new, locally processed voice assistant arriving in autumn 2026.
According to industry analyst Mark Gurman, Apple has completed the physical development of its next-generation streaming device and compact smart speaker, with employees already utilizing the units internally. The release of both devices, expected later this year, has been intentionally delayed to coincide with a comprehensive overhaul of the Siri voice assistant in autumn 2026.
The compact smart speaker retains its existing exterior dimensions and acoustic profile, offering no alterations to its physical casing or audio output. The modification is entirely internal, replacing the previous S5 processor with the more efficient S9 chip to handle the computational demands of the updated assistant.
The streaming device undergoes a similar internal exchange, substituting the A15 processor with the A17 Pro chip previously utilized in the iPhone 15 Pro. This increase in processing power allows the device to execute artificial intelligence functions locally rather than transmitting data to external servers.
For the modern kitchen, these devices function as the primary interface for timing, temperature monitoring, and visual instruction. Local processing ensures that a cook issuing a command over the sound of a ventilation hood receives an immediate response without the latency of cloud transmission, while keeping domestic audio data strictly within the home.
The streaming unit will also ship with a revised remote control, updating an interface that has remained unchanged since the summer of 2021. Whether this revision addresses the physical ergonomics of the wand or merely its internal transmission components remains unconfirmed.
A kitchen relies on the seamless integration of its tools, where a delay in a timer or a missed instruction alters the final arrangement of a dish.
