Café Landtmann celebrates a sweet anniversary with Roncalli

A Gugelhupf for the fiftieth anniversary: Café Landtmann celebrates the Roncalli Circus Theatre's anniversary with a limited edition of its classic cake.

Landtmann and Roncalli have a long-standing neighborly relationship. Every two years, the circus pitches its tents across the street. For the Paul family, a visit to their familiar coffeehouse is a must. To mark the anniversary, this connection is expressed in a sweet commemorative gift: Landtmann's Original Gugelhupf comes in a blue and white box reminiscent of the Roncalli tent.

In addition to the physical proximity, there is a personal appreciation. Bernhard Paul has been a regular at the café since his student days and particularly values Berndt Querfeld's dedication to Viennese coffeehouse culture. For him, the glass of water served with coffee, the cake display, and the meticulous service are all part of the quality that defines a coffeehouse.

Craftsmanship in the anniversary box

Berndt Querfeld sees the connection between the two family businesses in their shared love of craftsmanship. The Gugelhupf is produced in the Viennese manufactory, handcrafted and packaged by hand. For the Roncalli edition, the familiar recipe is given a new look.

“For the anniversary edition, we’ve put our Gugelhupf in very special Roncalli packaging – inspired by the blue and white Grand Chapiteau,” explains Querfeld. The edition is limited to 1,000 pieces, each box containing a 750-gram, buttery Gugelhupf.

Ferdinand Querfeld is also involved in the collaboration. For him, the project brings together two family businesses whose work thrives on dedication and experience. The Gugelhupf cake has its place for the next generation as well as for the guests who have been coming to the coffee house for decades.

The anniversary edition is available in the café, in selected Spar premium supermarkets, and directly from Roncalli during their Austrian tours. Ferdinand Querfeld also announced an accompanying social media competition.

Apricot jam just like Mom used to make

Bernhard Paul is a self-confessed gourmet with a trained eye for quality – from top-tier restaurants to individual ingredients. When it comes to apricot jam, however, his personal benchmark lies in his childhood. When his mother was making apricot jam, he was allowed to nibble on the sweet leftovers from the pot. Staud's Roncalli edition reminds him precisely of that taste: it tastes just like his mother's jam, he assures us.

Paul also brought along a linguistic memory: the expression "Marmeladinger," the meaning of which had just escaped him. To explain: In Austria, this was a mocking term for Germans, especially those from northern Germany. Its origin is believed to be the rations given to German soldiers in the First World War, who received jam as a substitute for butter or lard.

Staud's managing director Stefan Schauer is contributing a 130-gram jar of apricots with a 70 percent fruit content to the anniversary celebration. The specially designed label makes the apricot a second culinary birthday greeting. It goes just as well with Gugelhupf cake as it does on buttered bread or in crepes – and thus with those pleasures that Paul associates with Vienna.

Coffeehouse culture while traveling

Paul's deep connection to Viennese coffeehouse culture is also evident in his café in Hamburg. There, the collector has incorporated historical furnishings from Viennese coffeehouses. He announced at the presentation that Gugelhupf (a type of Viennese cake) will also be offered there in the future.

On September 16th, Roncalli celebrates its premiere at the town hall square. The circus will remain next door to the Landtmann Circus until October 11th. Meanwhile, no seat at the ring is needed for a sweet anniversary treat: Gugelhupf cake and jam bring a piece of the birthday celebration home with you.

Bernhard Paul provided the common motto at the end of the presentation, which he attended together with his wife Eliana Larible-Paul and his daughter Lili Paul-Roncalli: "Everything you do with love will also be loved."
