Onion bonbons: unusual recipe wins over palates and sells thousands of units in SC
Ituporanga, a small town in the Upper Itajaí Valley known as the National Onion Capital, gave rise to an unusual dessert: the onion bonbon.
The recipe was created by chocolatier Adriana Bittencourt in 2024 for the city's gastronomic festival and was a success. This year alone, more than 2,500 units were sold.
“At that moment, we needed to honor the settlers of our city. And that's when I had the idea: I'm going to make an onion candy,” recalls Adriana.
Onion candy is a hit in Ituporanga.
The dish uses caramelized red onion combined with semi-sweet chocolate.
The public's reactions to tasting the onion candy vary, but they amuse the creator. According to Adriana, even those who find the taste strange end up taking boxes home as gifts for their families.
“We are the National Onion Capital, right? So, it was a way to really bring our roots, our identity. It’s an honor, because it’s not just the name of my company, it’s the name of my city that we’re taking abroad,” he comments.
