Greek Street Food Among the World’s Best as Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes Reach the Top 10
Greek street food has received international recognition, with three Greek cities ranking among the world’s top 10 destinations for street food.
A global paper by Radical Storage examined 6,897 street food establishments across the 100 most visited cities worldwide. Paris claimed first place with a score of 7.2 out of 10, followed by Athens in second, Thessaloniki in third and Rhodes in sixth.
The results place Greece ahead of other leading food destinations, including Italy, Spain and Vietnam, with three cities represented in the global top 10. Athens Takes Second Place Athens earned its high ranking thanks to the variety and accessibility of its street food scene. The research identified 29 different cuisines and an average of 4.21 street food vendors per square kilometre, giving the Greek capital a higher vendor density than Paris.
Around 81.5% of its street food vendors were classified as budget friendly, making the city one of the best destinations in the world for travellers looking for inexpensive meals. From souvlaki and gyros to koulouri, pies and other traditional Greek snacks, street food remains an essential part of everyday life in Athens. Thessaloniki Ranks Third Thessaloniki followed closely behind Athens in third place, reinforcing its reputation as one of Greece’s leading food destinations.
The northern Greek city recorded the highest street food vendor density among the top 10 cities, with 4.66 vendors per square kilometre. For visitors, Thessaloniki offers an impressive range of affordable local favourites, including its famous bougatsa, souvlaki, pastries and other traditional snacks.
Its strong showing in the international ranking adds further weight to the city’s long standing claim to being Greece’s food capital. Around 83% of street food establishments on the island received ratings of four stars or higher. That figure placed Rhodes ahead of leading destinations including Rome and Florence when it came to the quality of its street food offerings.
The result also highlights that Greece’s street food culture extends well beyond Athens and Thessaloniki. On Rhodes, visitors can enjoy local flavours while exploring the island’s historic streets, medieval landmarks and popular tourist areas.
Greece Makes a Strong Showing Another Greek city, Heraklion, as well performed strongly in the rankings, placing second worldwide for value. The results underline the depth of Greece’s street food culture, which combines affordability, quality and variety across both mainland cities and the islands.
For Greeks, that said, the international recognition may come as little surprise. Street food has long been part of everyday life, whether it is a sesame covered koulouri bought on the way to work, a freshly baked tiropita from a neighbourhood bakery or a souvlaki enjoyed late at night.
The new ranking simply gives international recognition to a food culture that Greece has embraced for generations. With Athens in second place, Thessaloniki third and Rhodes sixth, Greece has established itself as one of the world’s leading countries for street food, proving that some of the country’s best culinary experiences can be enjoyed quickly, casually and for just a few euros.
