Why Buffalo Wild Wings is Bringing Back a Taste of the 2000s

From the resurgence of vinyl records, Y2K fashion trends, and other retro experiences like old-school diners, people are craving nostalgia. More than 50 percent of U.S. adults are likely to make a purchase when it makes them feel nostalgic for the past, according to GWI.

“If there’s one brand that can authentically speak to nostalgia, it’s Buffalo Wild Wings. For decades, we’ve been part of the memories, traditions, and shared experiences that bring people back time and time again,”

Maybe it’s the exhaustion with digital overload and AI-everything, or maybe it’s the tendency to look at the past with rose-colored glasses. But for Buffalo Wild Wings CMO Scott Nelson, the reason why nostalgia is having such a moment—and why it’s especially relevant for full-service restaurants—is because it brings people back to the experiences they loved most. “There’s comfort in revisiting the familiar,” he says.

“If there’s one brand that can authentically speak to nostalgia, it’s Buffalo Wild Wings. For decades, we’ve been part of the memories, traditions, and shared experiences that bring people back time and time again,” Nelson continues.

That’s why Buffalo Wild Wings is bringing back a taste of the early 2000s with its Throwback Menu, which launched on August 19 for a limited time until November 9. The menu revived some of the brand’s most iconic menu items, like mini corn dogs and Buffalo Chips, plus involved a partnership with Y2K fashion brand Von Dutch for an exclusive capsule collection celebrating the era. “With football season kicking off, it felt like the perfect time to bring back some fan-favorite menu items and give guests a taste of the Buffalo Wild Wings they remember,” Nelson notes. “The Throwback Menu celebrates the flavors and moments that helped make game days memorable in the first place.”

Thankfully, the culinary team didn’t have to guess which particular fan-favorite items would be best for the Throwback Menu—because guests told them. “Fans have been telling us for years exactly what they wanted back. Items like Hot BBQ sauce and Buffalo Chips have never really gone away from the conversation,” Nelson says.

“We looked at the menu items that generated the most passion, the most requests, and the strongest memories, then built a lineup that felt authentically B-Dubs.” The enthusiasm from fans showed up everywhere, from social media comments and Reddit threads dedicated to discontinued menu items to conversations with Buffalo Wild Wings team members, many of whom had favorites they were eager to see return.

That speaks to the fact that the brand isn’t bringing the items back because nostalgia is popular or as a simple marketing gimmick, but because guests have genuinely been asking for them. “The Throwback Menu is really a thank-you to fans who never stopped asking,” he adds. “When guests have a real emotional connection to something, honoring that relationship feels authentic. That’s very different from simply jumping onto a trend for the sake of it.

And today’s consumers are savvy enough to know which brands are chasing a fad, and which brands have genuinely earned a place in the conversation.” The challenge then became how to recreate those menu items while preserving the flavors longtime B-Dubs fans knew and loved—a more difficult task than it seems, since people often give preferential treatment to past experiences. “The goal wasn’t to reinvent these favorites.

It was to bring them back the way fans remember them,” Nelson says. “Our culinary team focused on capturing the flavors that made these items so popular in the first place while ensuring they meet the quality and standards guests expect today. We wanted the experience to feel familiar from the very first bite.”

The full Throwback Menu—available at participating Buffalo Wild Wings sports bars and Buffalo Wild Wings GO locations nationwide until November 9—includes:

  • Buffalo Chips: Thick-cut, crispy potato slices fried until golden brown for the perfect crunchy bite.
  • Mini Corn Dogs: Bite-sized hot dogs wrapped in a crispy cornmeal batter.
  • Beef on Weck Sliders: Tender shaved sirloin topped with creamy horseradish aioli on a caraway-seeded kaiser bun, served with savory au jus for dipping.
  • Garlic Mushrooms: Crispy, lightly breaded garlic mushrooms fried to golden perfection and served with zesty Southwestern Ranch.
  • Hot BBQ Sauce: A bold twist on classic BBQ, blending smoky sweetness with a kick of spicy heat.
  • Buffalo Zoo Cocktail: Bacardi, Grey Goose, Jim Beam, peach schnapps, grenadine, pineapple juice, and orange juice, finished with an orange wheel garnish.

“The best menu items don’t belong to a specific era—they stand the test of time, Nelson adds. “The nostalgia gives existing fans a reason to get excited, but these are products that still deserve a place on the menu today. For longtime guests, it’s a reunion with favorites they’ve missed … For newer guests, it’s a chance to discover some of the items that helped put Buffalo Wild Wings on the map.”

While Nelson’s personal favorite on the limited-time menu is the mini corn dogs, he also points out the Throwback Menu is about more than just the food, but how the F&B, “Von Dubs” collection, and celebration of the era work together to create a cohesive guest experience that builds onto the broader cultural movement. “The early 2000s were a defining time for Buffalo Wild Wings, and Von Dutch was one of the most recognizable brands of that period,” he says. “The food brings back the flavors fans remember, while the Von Dubs collection gives them a way to wear and share the nostalgia beyond our restaurant walls.” The five-piece Von Dubs collection features exclusive trucker hats, a hoodie, a baby tee, and a classic tee.

Fans can purchase the limited-edition Von Dubs trucker hat online beginning Monday, September 21, at vondutch.com. The remaining pieces from the collection will be available exclusively at an invite-only event in Los Angeles to celebrate the partnership. He adds, “I had a Von Dutch hat back then too, so I’m right there with everyone reliving it.”
