Japan’s Umami United Raises $2M to Expand Plant-Based Egg Alternatives Into the US and Europe

Umami United , a Japanese producer of plant-based egg alternatives, has secured 310 million yen (around $2.01 million) in additional pre-seed backing.

“With this funding, we will further strengthen business development, the functional development of plant-based eggs, and overseas partnerships, and meet the expectations and demand from North America and around the world.”

Investors in the round included mint, Beyond Next Ventures, Genesia Ventures, SMBC Venture Capital Co., United Co., Mitsubishi UFJ Capital Co., and Mizuho Capital Co. Umami United works to reconstruct the complex functions of eggs, including their heat coagulation, foaming, emulsifying, and binding properties. With the help of the new financing, the firm will further develop its technology; this could include creating thermo-irreversible gelling substances for use in next-generation egg substitutes. Umami United also plans to establish a manufacturing base for mass production, accelerating its rollout into various food sector applications.
