Ever since Munchi Pancakes opened at Fernvale Hawker Centre, I can never leave the area without my mother asking me to buy some of their pancakes before heading home. Munchi Pancakes serves traditional min jiang kueh in a variety of flavours, ranging from peanut and black sesame to even biscoff!

You can choose from three pancake flavours: Original, Charcoal, and Green Tea. Of their signature pancakes, my personal favourite is the Belgian Chocolate Munchi ($2.20), with rich Belgian chocolate sandwiched between the fluffy pancake. Other interesting flavours here include Oreo Cheese ($2.20) and Thai Milk Tea ($2.20).

The Apricus Coffee & Food Co. debunks any myths that Sengkang is a dead zone for classy cafes. Founded by the same team behind The Populus, The Apricus Coffee & Food Co. serves delightful brunch treats and desserts.

The Apricus French Toast ($22+) will please dessert lovers with its fluffy vanilla brioche toast, topped with house-made maple granola, seasonal berries, butterscotch and a roasted rice soft serve. Rather than the cafe-standard truffle fries, they’ve got a Crispy Potato Stack ($12+).

Established in 2016, Mohamed Javed Indian Muslim Food is well-loved for their crispy and buttery prata, so much so that they earned the title of Best Prata at the Halal Awards 2022 in Singapore. The prata here is served with three types of curry: Chicken, Mutton, and Fish.

Choose from a variety of prata, from classic options such as the Plain Prata ($1.20) to other variations such as Coin Prata ($5), Cheese Prata (from $2.20) and more. Besides prata, they are also known for their Nasi Briyani ($7), featuring a generous serving of fragrant and fluffy basmati rice, a whole chicken leg, a large fried papadum cracker, and a bowl of chicken curry on the side. If you’re craving Korean food, head down to JIN Kimchi Express, a Korean-run stall with an extensive menu including bibimbap, naengmyeon, and K-BBQ. The Jin Signature Kimchi Stew Set ($6) is a bestseller here, boasting a sweet broth that’s not too spicy with thick slices of pork belly, served with white rice and house-made cabbage and cucumber kimchi.

If you’re not a fan of kimchi, go for their Icy Mul Naengmyeon ($8.80) instead. This is a refreshing dish starring buckwheat noodles in a beef-based broth topped with a halved boiled egg, shredded cucumber, and pickled white radish.

Another place in Jalan Kayu is Jerry’s BBQ and Grill, which prides themselves on their Memphis-style BBQ. A must-try is their house speciality, the Hickory Smoked BBQ Baby Back Pork Ribs, which come in either a Half ($24.95++) or a Full ($36.95++) slab.

The pork ribs are said to be dry barbecued in a Memphis fashion for up to five hours and slathered with a tangy house-made BBQ sauce for a richer flavour. As for the side dishes, their Buffalo Wings (from $12.95++) are perfect for sharing if you’re here in a group.

• 12. Armenian Street Fried Kway Teow

The story behind Armenian Street Fried Kway Teow dates back to 1949, when its owner Mr Tan Chong Chia first started his business in a coffee shop at Armenian and Loke Yew Street. Today, his famous stall is located in the heart of the Sengkang neighbourhood.

Their simple, yet delicious Char Kway Teow (from $3.50) has long been loved for its sweet and savoury flavours. It’s stir-fried with fresh ingredients such as pork lard, egg, bean sprouts, cockles, and fish cake.

I’ll never forget the days when my friends and I would head to Thasevi Food for late-night supper after watching movies at Seletar Mall. Thasevi Food is open for 24 hours, which makes it a great dining spot throughout the day.
