Neither in a net nor in a plastic bag: potatoes keep better in this simple container
There's a trick that will allow you to easily slow down the sprouting process of your potatoes. And it all comes down to choosing the right container!
We very often buy our potatoes in net bags, and therefore in large quantities. Whether these bags weigh 2 or 10 kg, it's not uncommon to see potatoes sprout if they've been left too long at the back of the cupboard.
So, if you're tired of seeing your potatoes sprout after just a few days, there's a foolproof technique! Thanks to it, you can continue to enjoy gratins, salads, or soups for a little longer. This trick will allow you to store your potatoes properly.
The best way to store potatoes
It's important to be vigilant once your potatoes are covered in sprouts. Experts recommend not consuming them when the sprouts are several centimeters long. In such cases, the potato becomes indigestible and dangerous.
So how do you keep potatoes fresh longer and avoid waste? We recommend storing them in a paper bag, a basket, or a well-ventilated crate. This allows air to circulate around them, helping to evaporate moisture and preventing sprouting.
Another helpful tip: store your paper bag, basket, or crate in a cool, dark place. Light can cause potatoes to turn green and lead to the formation of solanine, a naturally toxic compound when present in large quantities. A pantry, garage, or cellar that isn't too damp are therefore ideal storage locations!
Apples, an ally for longer-lasting potatoes
If you want to maximize your chances of not wasting your potatoes, there's a natural and inexpensive trick! Simply place an apple in your storage area, near your potatoes.
And as if by magic, this fruit will inhibit the germination of tubers and therefore slow down the development of sprouts. This will allow you to gain a few extra days of storage before sprouts appear.
