Refreshing Tomatini: Cocktail with vodka and lime

When you think of cocktails with tomatoes, the classic Bloody Mary probably springs to mind. This world-famous drink is undoubtedly a favorite for a leisurely weekend brunch. But the red fruit has so much more to offer in the bar world. A prime example is the Tomatini.

Ingredients · Servings 1
  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 80 ml Vodka
  • 20 ml lime juice
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ice cubes
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
Method · 5 min
  1. Cut the tomato into small pieces. Place them in a glass or bowl and crush them with a pestle to release the juice.
  2. Pour the tomato puree into a cocktail shaker.
  3. Add vodka, lime juice, and sugar. Add a few ice cubes to the shaker, seal it, and shake vigorously for 15 seconds to thoroughly mix all the ingredients.
  4. Strain the drink through a bar strainer and divide it between two glasses, sprinkling a small pinch of pepper on each.

Elegance in a cocktail glass: Tomatini

A balmy evening on the balcony or a Mediterranean dinner with guests calls for the perfect aperitif. This is where the Tomatini truly shines. The base is fresh tomatoes. Since they play the starring role, it's worth choosing particularly ripe and aromatic varieties. Vine tomatoes or ripe cherry tomatoes naturally offer an intense sweetness and plenty of umami. These are complemented by vodka as a neutral alcoholic base, freshly squeezed lime juice for the necessary acidity, and a touch of sugar. If you prefer, you can opt for honey or agave syrup. A pinch of black pepper adds a subtle spiciness at the end. And of course, ice cubes are essential for the perfect temperature.

The preparation begins directly in the shaker. Cut the tomatoes into large chunks and crush them firmly with a muddler. Now pour the vodka, freshly squeezed lime juice, and sugar over the tomato puree. Fill the shaker generously with ice cubes and shake the mixture vigorously for about fifteen seconds. Then pour the liquid through a fine bar strainer into chilled glasses. This leaves seeds and skin residue in the shaker, resulting in a clear texture. Finally, grind fresh black pepper over the surface.

An attractive glass completes the experience. A small, skewered cocktail tomato on the rim or a fresh sprig of basil perfectly underscores the drink's Mediterranean character. For an alcohol-free version, simply replace the classic vodka with a non-alcoholic alternative. Those who enjoy experimenting with flavors can opt for a floral gin instead of vodka. The gin's herbal notes harmonize beautifully with the fruity tomato, adding a more complex depth to the overall flavor.
