Ground Beef Cheesesteak

Satisfy those Philly cheesesteak cravings with a ground beef version that still brings all of the iconic flavors in a more budget-friendly form. It’s somewhere between a sloppy joe and a traditional cheesesteak and boy is it delicious. It’s also ready in 30 minutes!

Ingredients · Servings 8
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 or leaner)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 medium green bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 8 hamburger buns (or hoagie buns)
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese or cheese whiz)
Method · 25 min
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in 2 pounds ground beef and season with 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Cook, breaking the beef into small pieces, until it starts to brown, about 7 to 9 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Push the cooked ground beef to the edges of the pan. Add 4 tablespoons salted butter to the center of the skillet, followed by 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced) and 1 medium green bell pepper (thinly sliced). Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion and pepper are softened and slightly browned, about 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cube 8 ounces cream cheese and add to the skillet. Fold the cream cheese into the beef mixture until fully melted and incorporated, creating a creamy sauce.
  4. Turn off the heat. Spoon the beef mixture onto 8 hamburger buns, about 1/2 cup per sandwich, and top each with a slice of Provolone cheese. Serve immediately.
  5. For best results, toast the buns before assembling.
