Apple pies and cakes with apples
Apples are a fruit that is widely available in our country and has enjoyed unwavering popularity for centuries. It's no wonder they are so popular in cakes. Here you'll find inspiration for various apple cakes, as well as a recipe for a quick apple pie.
Which apples should I choose?
Choosing the right apple variety really depends on individual preferences and tastes. Some people prefer sweet fruits, others more tart. Sweet-and-sour varieties can also be used for apple cakes. If you enjoy a distinct sweetness, use Ligols, Champions, or Lobos. Varieties that are more tart and will balance the sweet flavor of the cake include Gloster, Grey Renette, and Antonovka. It's also worth paying attention to seasonality and choosing the freshest fruit available at the moment. In Poland, we have summer apple varieties—Paperback and Piros; autumn apples—Antonovka, Delikates, and Gaja; and winter apples—Ligols. If you don't feel like preparing apples for cakes, many recipes use jarred apples available in stores.
Apple pie or apple pie?
The terms apple pie and apple cake are sometimes used interchangeably, but it's worth knowing that there's a subtle difference between these cakes. Apple pie is made with a shortcrust pastry, and its filling doesn't necessarily have to be apple. Of course, the most popular is the apple pie. Meanwhile, apple cake is a cake with apples on any base, usually made with wheat flour. Whether you want a simple cake with a time-sensitive preparation, or something more challenging, like a spectacular apple tart – a bouquet of roses, I've prepared recipes for you for apple delicacies, from which you're sure to find something for every occasion.
