The challenging cake from MasterChef: the judges were delighted with the result

A demanding Swedish classic

The Swedish princess cake is recognizable by its delicate green marzipan dress and distinctive domed shape. The contestants were given 130 minutes to prepare and a recipe (you can view it HERE), and the judges decided to try only the most promising cakes.

This wasn't the first time the MasterChef contestants had encountered this challenging dessert. It was introduced in the fourth season by food blogger Manuela Kjeilen, who hails from Sweden.

Karim also eloquently summarized that the task was not easy during the preparation: "This is a clean slate."

Although the cake looks quite complicated at first glance, Karim reminded the contestants that it is made up of elements that represent the foundations of pastry making. "It is a demanding cake, but it is made up of the basics that we learn in the first year of pastry making," he explained. The correct order is especially important when preparing it. Luka advised that they start with the sponge cake, which should be quite thick, then the cream and raspberry jam, and that the marzipan should come only towards the end, when the remaining elements are already cooling.

The hardest part is the assembly

Assembling the cake also requires a lot of precision. The first layer of sponge cake is covered with raspberry jam, which should not be spread all the way to the edge. This is followed by a second layer of sponge cake and vanilla cream, but it is also important that it does not extend over the edge.

The characteristic dome shape of the cake is provided by properly whipped cream. The assembled cake must then be covered with cream on the outside and cooled thoroughly. Only then does one of the most demanding steps come – covering it with rolled out marzipan and the final decoration with the characteristic rose and leaf.

The top four in front of the judges

Among the 12 competitors, Tanja, Anna, Ian and Dominik convinced the judges the most with their cakes, which is why their desserts were selected for tasting. Tanja was the most enthusiastic in the end. The judges' reactions during the tasting already indicated that she had achieved something special, and Luka and Karim even licked their fingers after tasting.

"I'll give you a congratulatory note right away for the rose. Basically, you hit the right proportions. You brought the juiciness nicely with the correct dosage of jam, vanilla cream and cream. Everything is just right. This is for the showcase," Karim praised her cake. Luka didn't hide his excitement either: "Today you set the bar very high for a Swedish princess." Mojmir added about the final result: "Now we can just applaud with joy."

Tanja won immunity

The excellent Swedish princess cake brought Tanja victory and her second immunity this season. The judges' nice comments moved her deeply. "Even when I stood in front of the judges and they gave me nice comments, I could barely hold back my tears," she admitted after the victory. The success also gave her new confidence: "I finally believe that I can do it, that I can reach for those highest stars." She was especially proud that the immunity badge was given to her by pastry chef Karim Merdjadi.
