This Food Truck’s Delicious Wings Are Just as Good as Wingstop’s
We almost always favor local restaurants over the conglomerates, but honestly when it comes to chicken wings, it’s hard to beat Wingstop and Pluckers. Tommy Want Wingy’s food truck is a rare exception. Its French-cut wings are juicy with a deep crunch, and coated in a handful of carefully selected flavors.
What to order
- Lemon pepper seasoning is a classic, but it’s been leapfrogged by its cousin — lime pepper needs a spot on every wing menu. Tommy Want Wingy’s chile-limón seasoning takes fresh lime juice and Tajin, making for cheek-puckering magic that pairs perfectly with a ranch dip.
- On the sweeter side, go for the spicy pineapple. Its sauce is made with Sriracha and real bits of pineapple. The best part is getting a bite of those tiny pineapple chunks clinging to your wings.
- Make Napoleon Dynamite proud and go for an order of tater tots over the fries, which edges the latter out ever so slightly in flavor, seasoning, and shareability.
Take note
Tommy Want Wingy’s Buffalo sauce doesn’t hit the classic trifecta of vinegar, butter, and spice. It leans heavily on the latter, with peppers leading the flavor. It’s still a good, moderately spicy flavor, but Buffalo sauce purists may want to steer clear.
Insider tip
There are currently three Tommy Want Wingy food trucks. The best location is the one at Barton Springs Saloon, not because the food there is better or anything, but because that’s the best bar it’s parked in front of. There’s a large selection of beers on tap and the vibe is excellent. It’s a chill sports bar that doubles as a true dive.
