Poppy seed cake in pots: an old recipe that never disappoints
Some recipes never go out of style – not because of complicated techniques or expensive ingredients, but because they always work. One of those homemade classics is definitely poppy seed cake, which many people know from childhood.
Its biggest advantage is its simplicity of preparation. You hardly need a scale, as you can measure out the ingredients for the sponge cake using a yogurt cup. Then, simply pour the mixture into a baking dish, bake, and top with a quick chocolate glaze, which adds a rich, full flavor to the cake.
It's a dessert that can be prepared on the go – even while cooking lunch or when we don't have much time to bake. That's why poppy seed cake is still very popular today for home family gatherings, celebrations or trays of homemade cakes, as it cuts beautifully into even pieces and remains moist even the next day.
It goes great with coffee or tea, and many people also love it because it combines just the right ratio between a light poppy seed flavor and a sweet chocolate glaze.
Ingredients:
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1 vanilla sugar
- 1 cup of oil
- 1.5 cups of milk
- 2 cups flour
- 1 baking powder
- 1.5 cups of ground poppy seeds
- 1 cup of chocolate milk
- 100 g cooking chocolate
- 2 to 3 teaspoons of oil
*for measuring ingredients, use a yogurt cup (volume is 180 ml)
Preparation process:
First, beat the eggs with sugar and vanilla sugar until the mixture rises and becomes light and foamy.
Continue adding oil and milk. Then manually mix in the flour and poppy seeds. In the end, you should get a smooth and well-mixed mixture.
Place baking paper on a medium-sized baking sheet and spread the poppy seed mixture on it. Smooth it out nicely on top, let it cool, then bake for 30 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.
Remove the baked sponge cake from the baking pan, turn it over and remove the baking paper while it is still warm. Place it back in the baking pan and moisten it well with chocolate milk. Leave to cool.
Prepare the chocolate glaze or topping. Cut the chocolate into pieces and melt it in the microwave or over steam with the oil. Once the chocolate has melted, stir gently to create a smooth and shiny topping, which you pour over the sponge cake. Allow the topping to set.
Cut the pastry into equally sized cubes, which can be decorated with whipped cream.
Why do some people add grated apple to the dough?
Many people also like to add grated apple to the poppy seed cake batter, as it makes the sponge cake even juicier and softer. The apple releases moisture during baking, which keeps the cake fresh longer and makes it less crumbly.
Additionally, the apple nicely complements the flavor of the poppy seeds and chocolate, adding a slightly fruity note that makes the dessert even more aromatic. This is an especially popular trick in homemade recipes where we want to achieve a soft and light texture without complicated preparation.
