Mistakes in making Turkish coffee that ruin its taste
Many people cannot imagine a day without Turkish coffee, and lovers of the intoxicating black drink drink their first cup almost as soon as they open their eyes.
Below we present some tips for making great Turkish coffee, and we will also point out common mistakes that are best avoided when preparing it.
1. Choose the right coffee
Different brewing methods require different types of coffee, as the coffee extraction rate is higher when the coffee is ground more finely. As a rule of thumb, brewing methods with shorter contact times require finely ground coffee beans, while those with longer contact times require coarser ground coffee beans. Therefore, use finely ground coffee beans for Turkish coffee. Use high-quality Arabica for the best taste.
Freshness: Use freshly ground coffee as this will significantly affect the taste. Store coffee in a dry and dark place in an airtight container to maintain its freshness.
2. Adequate water
Since the popular intoxicating drink contains approximately 98 percent water, it is very important what kind of water you use, as this greatly affects the quality.
Rule: It is best to use filtered or fresh spring water.
3. Water temperature
During brewing, the water temperature should be between 90 and 95 degrees Celsius, which allows the flavors to develop without overcooking. Too high a temperature can cause the coffee to taste bitter.
Rule: You can boil water and let it stand for about 30 seconds before cooking.
4. Wrong ratio
People often add too much coffee to make it stronger, which can actually risk a sour taste.
Rule of thumb: use approximately 7-10g of ground coffee for every 100ml of water. Adjust the amount according to personal preference.
5. Don't stir too much Once the cezve is on the fire, don't stir the coffee anymore. Don't wait for it to rise to the top of the coffee pot a few times, as this will change its taste. Just let the coffee heat up and form foam. Rule: when the coffee boils, remove it from the stove and don't stir. Let it stand for 3-4 seconds, then add a spoonful of cold water and pour the prepared coffee into cups.
6. Coffee with sugar Never add sugar to already brewed Turkish coffee. Rule: add sugar to cold water before placing it on the stove.
7. Serving
Pour the coffee slowly and carefully to preserve the foam. Serve it in small cups.
Rule of thumb: Don't stir your coffee after pouring, as stirring the grounds in the cup can ruin the taste. Let the grounds settle to the bottom before drinking your coffee.
