Honey Mustard Sauce
Honey mustard sauce is a sauce of uncertain origin, widely used to season salads and chicken (grilled and breaded). There are many variations of this sauce, and in this article we will highlight the most popular ones.
- 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard or similar
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard or similar
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- black pepper to taste
- Place all ingredients in a medium bowl.
- Mix well with a spatula or whisk.
- Serve or store in the refrigerator.
Mustard adds a strong flavor, while honey adds sweetness to the sauce. Several other ingredients are often used to add more flavor or texture: mayonnaise (creaminess), lemon and vinegar (sour flavor to counterbalance the sweetness of the honey), etc.
Origin of Honey Mustard Sauce
The mixture of honey and mustard has existed for many centuries, and its origin is uncertain. In ancient Egypt, it was already common to mix honey with mustard to lessen the intensity of the mustard's flavor.
There are also documents showing that mustard and honey was a very common combination in Ancient Rome. The Roman cookbook De re Coquinaria, written in the 4th or 5th century, included a recipe for a cold mustard seed sauce that contained honey, cumin, dill, and black pepper, among other ingredients. This sauce would be used to season roasted wild boar. Several other recipes in the same book include mustard and honey.
Honey Mustard Sauce with Mayonnaise
Honey mustard and mayonnaise dressing is quite popular in the United States, and is used both as a salad dressing and to season chicken (grilled, breaded, nuggets, etc.).
Mayonnaise adds creaminess to the sauce, as well as making its flavor more delicate. The lemon, which we use in the recipe below, helps to counterbalance the sweetness of the honey.
Mustard and Honey Vinaigrette Sauce
Mustard and honey vinaigrette is a variation of the traditional French vinaigrette, usually made with olive oil, vinegar, and mustard. The mustard, in addition to flavor, acts as an emulsifier, preventing the vinegar and oil from separating. The non-traditional ingredient is honey, which adds sweetness to this sauce.
Mustard and honey vinaigrette dressing is best used as a salad dressing.
