Barrio Sur: Italian-Uruguayan Gastronomy at San Ángel Inn

Mexico City isn't just the hustle and bustle of the city center and iconic neighborhoods like Roma or Condesa. The south of the capital has its own rhythm, and Barrio Sur, located in San Ángel Inn, is a perfect example of its tranquil and elegant character.

A culinary experience with a multicultural essence

From the moment you step through the doors of this old colonial-style house, the aromas and flavors transport you straight to Montevideo. The restaurant's name pays homage to the Barrio Sur neighborhood of the Uruguayan capital, a historic area known for its rich culture and Afro-Uruguayan influence. This cultural connection is also reflected in the murals that decorate the interior, replicas of those that adorn the real Barrio Sur in Uruguay.

The menu is a tribute to the Italian-Uruguayan tradition, a result of the large Italian migrations to Uruguay. You'll find options ranging from empanadas, pasta, and pizza to the highest quality cuts of meat. The artisanal processes used in making the pasta and bread, as well as the use of premium ingredients, ensure a memorable dining experience.

Dishes to please all palates in Barrio Sur

If you're an ovo-lacto vegetarian, like me, you'll have no problem finding something to suit your taste. The pasta dishes are generous and stand out for their authenticity. Some recommendations include the ravioli with tomato sauce, the gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese sauce, or the tagliatelle. Furthermore, the meat dishes are made with High Choice USA cuts, guaranteeing quality and flavor.

You can't leave without trying the chimichurri, whose version here is more balanced and subtle than in other restaurants, avoiding an overpowering garlic flavor. For a sweet finish, the dulce de leche pancake and the Chajá ice cream sundae are must-tries. The former is a crepe-style roll filled with cajeta (caramelized milk), which will delight any lover of this Mexican sweet. Meanwhile, the Chajá sundae, a fresher dessert with red berries, meringue, and cream, is ideal for those looking for something light and refreshing.

A wide-ranging menu and a wine cellar that will win you over.

Barrio Sur also stands out for its wine selection, boasting one of the most comprehensive collections of Uruguayan wines in the city. The real surprise is the variety of wines available. In my case, I followed the house recommendations and ordered a white wine by the glass, which, mind you, is by no means inferior. I tried a Don Pascual Chardonnay-Viognier and a Tannat, both from the Juanicó region of Uruguay—true gems that perfectly complement pasta dishes or cuts of meat that require tannins to balance their richness. Furthermore, the "Casa Barrio" shop, located on the ground floor, offers a curated selection of Uruguayan wines and products, such as dulce de leche, yerba mate, and Mexican chocolates, ideal for taking a piece of this experience home with you.

More than a restaurant, Barrio Sur is a southern classic

Barrio Sur has managed to remain in the hearts of Mexico City residents thanks to its consistency and its ability to offer a genuine experience. Whether for a family meal, a business meeting, or simply to enjoy a good glass of wine and a comforting dish, this Uruguayan corner in San Ángel Inn is a must-visit.
