Hot Toddy with Brandy

A hot toddy with brandy is a variation of the famous hot toddy—a cocktail made with strong alcohol, honey, spices, and citrus slices. The exact origin of the name is unknown. According to one theory, it has Indian roots, while another suggests the drink was named after its supposed creator.

Panforte, or "peppered bread," is such an ancient Italian dessert that its origins are steeped in legend. The classic Sienese recipe calls for 17 ingredients, while the Tuscan version has 14: nuts, dried fruit, honey, zest, and the oriental spices that give the cake its name. Incidentally, if you add chocolate to the recipe, you get panforte al cioccolato, which Italians often call panforte delle dame—panforte for ladies—due to its milder flavor.

Winter, with its frosts and a whole host of holidays, establishes its own rules. For example, it's tempting to forget about mojitos and Long Island sizzlers and start making hot alcoholic drinks at home. You might be surprised, but the list isn't limited to mulled wine and punch. Our selection includes 13 tried-and-true recipes, each of which is quite easy to recreate.

The term "brandy" encompasses dozens of styles and regions, from simple distillates to aged spirits. Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados, grappa, and rakia are also considered brandies, but they have completely different characters. In this article, we team up with spirits expert Konstantin Dukhanin to explore the different types of brandy, how to drink it properly, and what to look for when choosing and serving it.
