Record prices, inflation at 6 percent, fruit and ice cream cost 10 percent more
To understand that something's wrong, just wander around a market or browse a produce store. How much does a kilo of cherries cost? They can be found for as little as €16 a kilo, according to indignant websites and social media. But there's worse.
But aside from "jewelers" disguised as fruit and vegetables, the situation isn't rosy, due to price increases caused by the war in Ukraine, which have affected supplies, increasing costs overall. As Codacons explains, the food sector is doing very badly: retail prices for typical seasonal products are showing sharp increases. Ice cream is 9.5% more expensive, mineral water is up 6.1%, fruit juices are up 8.9%, and beer is up 3.5%. Fresh fish is up 7.7%, with seafood hitting a record high (+10.2%), while fresh fruit is up 7.8%, and fresh vegetables are up 12%.
Furthermore, eating out at a restaurant costs 4.2% more, visiting a museum costs 7.2% more, while staying in a hotel today costs an average of 2.4% more. And that's just the beginning, unfortunately.
