If you’re crossing the border soon, we’ve done the legwork of compiling the 40 best cafes in Johor Bahru (JB) worth visiting. Cafe hoppers, you can consider this your go-to guide!

Here’s even better news: most of these coffee and brunch spots are within 30 minutes by car from the JB customs. From matcha croissants to a teahouse with hanfu dress-up, here are the best JB cafes to head to on your next visit to Malaysia.

• 1. Oh My Ice

We dare say Oh My Ice offers the prettiest drinks out of all the best JB cafes listed here. This Korean-inspired cafe doubles as a tufting studio, making it the ideal spot to do something fun while sipping unique beverages with your friends. We were impressed when Castle In The Sky (RM23) was served—this drink is drawn to illustrate a stunning scenery of grass set against clear blue skies, made using aloe vera, butterfly pea milk, and sea salt foam.

Taste-wise, it’s really milky and creamy, so only get it if you can handle dairy! We also got the Glowing Sunset (RM16), a refreshing ade topped with sweet cotton candy.

The most memorable item we ordered was the Strawberry Cream Cake (RM23), featuring layers of fluffy, house-made sponge and strawberry jam within, with an exterior covered with a velvety smooth cream and more jam on the rim of the plate. • 2. Furiku

Matcha has been all the craze lately, but a cup of matcha latte in Singapore easily costs at least $6. That’s not the case at Furiku, though, where you can enjoy an Iced Kaze Matcha Latte at only RM11 for a regular cup.

The matcha at this Johor Bahru cafe leans grassy and mildly bitter, which are hallmarks of a good matcha latte in our books. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can customise your drink by choosing the intensity of your matcha, a signature base, and toppings.

The intensity level ranges from Easy (RM9) to Intermediate (RM11) and Advanced (RM14), while for your base, there are nine options to choose from, priced at RM3 each. Some popular picks include Taro, Red Bean, and Strawberry Yogurt!

• 3. Meow Me Cat House

If you love cats as much as we do, Meow Me Cat House is a must-visit. They are not a cat cafe, as you don’t pay an entrance or cover fee; instead, it’s a place where you can chill with cats over drinks and desserts.

Do note that you have to spend a minimum of RM8 to get a seat here! We enjoyed both the Tiramisu Latte (RM17) and Fizzy Orange Americano (RM17), accompanied by a dense slice of Basque Burnt Cheesecake (RM18).

Those with a sweet tooth will surely enjoy the Tiramisu Latte, which is essentially an iced latte with creamy mascarpone, cocoa powder, and ladyfingers. Else, the Fizzy Orange Americano is equally delicious; this concoction stars a layer of zesty orange juice paired with a strong Americano that hits the right spot. • 4. Slow Day Cafe

Here’s another matcha cafe in Johor Bahru that recently went viral on social media platforms: Slow Day Cafe. Everything is about tea here—from matcha to hojicha and genmaicha.

What’s interesting is that the cafe doubles as an art jamming studio—you’ll spot plenty of artwork done by customers at every corner. We got three items to try: Strawberry Matcha (RM17.90), Cold Matcha Espresso (RM17.90), and Genmaicha Nama Gateau Cake (RM28 per slice).

Their strawberry matcha latte features three beautiful layers of sweet strawberry compote, fresh milk, and a shot of matcha. This drink is on the sweeter side, with the grassy and earthy notes of the matcha taking a backseat! If you prefer a stronger green tea flavour, the Matcha Espresso is a safer bet.

Our favourite item of the lot was the Genmaicha Nama Gateau Cake, thanks to its roasted and nutty flavours; the dense and creamy texture of the dessert also reminded us of a rich gateau cake. Read our Slow Day Cafe feature.

Cheevit Cheeva is a popular Thai dessert chain with over 10 outlets worldwide. At the time of writing, there are six branches scattered across Malaysia, with one in Mount Austin.

The JB cafe is adorned with mainly green and brown accents, with both indoor and outdoor seats for you and your friends to chill over slow conversations and good desserts. We recommend the Shokupan Thai Tea Sang-Ka-Ya Bingsu (RM36), a refreshing treat starring Thai tea-infused shaved ice topped with crispy shokupan bits and thick Thai tea cream.

• 6. KACJ Coffee

For a slow morning or tea break, head to KACJ Coffee, where you can indulge in both coffee and fresh bakes. We saw a couple of solo diners reading or working here, so you can expect a quiet and relaxing environment away from the bustling city.

Starting with the drinks, we really enjoyed both the Iced White (RM14) and Iced Hojicha Latte (RM16). Their coffee was strong and full-bodied, pairing well with the oat milk, while the hojicha latte boasted earthy, roasted notes with just the right amount of sweetness. There’s also a selection of bakes to choose from, all prepared fresh every day!

Taro lovers can try the creamy Yam Mochi Toast (from RM13); we recommend sharing this as the stretchy mochi and dense yam paste can get a tad much towards the end. There’s also Sea Salt Butter Roll (RM5.90), AKA shio pan here! Read our KACJ Coffee feature.

• 7. The Bagel Factory

Our team has been to our fair share of bagel places in Singapore, as we’re big fans of the ring-shaped bread roll that often comes loaded with delicious fillings. At The Bagel Factory, you get a variety of flavours to choose from—we ordered four kinds to see if this JB cafe was worth a revisit.

There are both sweet and savoury options here. For the sweet flavours, we ordered the All About Blueberries (RM18+) and The KUNAFA (RM20+). We also tried the Green Onion? (RM18+).

Of the lot, we enjoyed the blueberries and green onion bagels; the latter was especially good as the fresh, mildly spicy green onions helped to cut through the heavy cream cheese. Read our The Bagel Factory feature.

With almost 12K followers on Instagram, Morihana Pastry is a popular destination for avid cafe hoppers. They specialise in pretty mini cakes available in a variety of flavours, with new creations introduced every now and then.

First, quench your thirst with a glass of Watermelon Punch (RM14+), the perfect treat to beat the heat. It’s a must to get their cakes here, too; go straight for the gorgeous Rose Watermelon Cake (RM20+) for a winning combination of almond cake topped with strawberry, lychee, and watermelon.

• 9. Manzanita Patisserie & Boulangerie

Manzanita Patisserie & Boulangerie has six outlets in Malaysia, with one at Eco Botanic and another at Paradigm Mall. There’s surely something for everyone here as their menu is relatively extensive, spanning brunch items, mains, drinks, and pastries.

We visited this JB cafe for their drinks and desserts, so we started with a cup of Hot Matcha Latte (RM10.80++). Matcha isn’t always done right, but the one we had here was rich and umami with a bittersweet aftertaste. As for cakes, we recommend the Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake (RM13.80++ per slice), delicately layered with sponge cake and dark chocolate cream.

• 10. off day cafe

Take a breather at off day cafe, a minimalist, trendy JB cafe that offers hearty meals, drinks, and desserts. We were excited to visit the cafe mainly because they use Niko Neko’s matcha powder, a popular brand from Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking of Niko Neko, we got an iced Matcha Latte (from RM14+) and Niko Neko Matcha Burnt Cheesecake (RM24+ per slice) to see how the powder fared in both a drink and dessert form. The cheesecake was incredibly delicious as it had everything we were looking for: bitter and earthy from the matcha, rich and savoury from the cream cheese. The latte, however, wasn’t the best we’ve had as the milk-to-matcha ratio was slightly amiss, with the former overpowering the latter.

We recommend the iced Houjicha Latte with Oatmilk (from RM18+) instead! If you’re feeling peckish, pair your drink with the Classic French Toast (RM23+) that’s topped with blueberries, strawberries, banana slices, cream, honey, and beef bacon. Read our off day cafe feature.

• 11. Keijometo

If industrial styles are your jam, you have to drop by Keijometo. The TikTok-famous Johor Bahru cafe has been constantly packed since its launch, and its rise in popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

One glance and you might mistake Keijometo as a hipster art gallery, thanks to its raw concrete outlook, which follows through inside with its bare-boned interiors. Food and drinks–wise, you can expect a Japanese-influenced menu. Matcha is the focus here, so we recommend trying the Watermelon Matcha Iced Latte (RM17+), a creamy blend of high-quality matcha powder with fresh milk and sweet watermelon juice.

Then, fill yourself up with the Mentaiko Tamagoyaki Sando (RM20+): deep-fried egg patties sandwiched between white bread, topped with creamy mentaiko sauce, and seared for a smoky finish. • 12. Carfeidian

If you’re driving to JB, this cafe is worth a pit stop. Carfeidian is tucked inside a car workshop, so you can leave your car there while grabbing a cup of joe.

Caffeine addicts will be spoilt for choice here, as the coffee menu is very extensive. The Caramel Biscotti Coffee (RM18++) is a must-try, which comes with house-made honeycomb candy for sweetness and crunch.

Pour in the espresso and stir everything together for the perfect balance of sweet caramel, rich milk, and full-bodied coffee. If you’re feeling peckish, we recommend getting the Blueberry Danish (RM16++), which tasted as delicious as it looked.

Alternatively, go for the Viennois Red Bean Butter (price TBD): sesame-crusted bread slathered with red bean paste and a generous slab of butter. The menu features a mix of Western dishes with Asian twists, such as the Assam Pedas Clam Pasta (RM36), where linguine is coated in a tangy, chilli padi-infused sauce.

Do check out their Clouds drinks series too, with flavours including the Strawberry Matcha (RM22), topped with airy strawberry foam, and the Kaya Toast (RM20), which blends butterscotch, espresso, and kaya-flavoured cream. • 13. Kirin Coffee

If you’re into cafes that feel more like an art museum, Kirin Coffee is one to check out. This two-storey spot leans fully into its “dopamine concept”, with a bold, all-red interior packed with quirky artworks and oddball decor pieces.

On the menu, expect drinks and desserts from RM7.90, each with a playful twist. Their beverages often come topped with unconventional garnishes, including mini croissants and even a toothbrush, while the cakes feature pop culture nods such as the iconic smiley face from Watchmen.

Another cool JB cafe in Mount Austin is Bloom by Mok Mok, a garden-themed cafe adorned with colourful floral ceiling and fairy lights. If you plan to take aesthetic pics for the ‘gram, be sure to take a seat nearer to the window for more natural light, as the cafe is dimly lit. The cafe offers a variety of brunch options, including the Prawn Sando (RM26+), a tom-yum flavoured sandwich filled with scrambled eggs and spinach.

• 15. Sunday Morning Coffee Shop

Located along Jalan Trus is a small and cosy Japanese cafe in Johor Bahru that you might miss in a blink when you walk past. Sunday Morning Coffee Shop is tucked on the second floor of a shophouse, and you have to go up a steep flight of stairs to enter.

Here’s a tip: make a beeline to the window seat for the most natural light! The warm and homey cafe serves small bites and pastries, with a focus on drip coffee.

Start your morning with a light and refreshing Cold Drip Iced Black Coffee (RM16). Those who prefer their coffee really simple can try their Hand Drip Hot Black Coffee (from RM13) instead. The food menu isn’t as extensive, but you’ll find mains such as their Japanese-style Curry Rice (RM24) to fill you up.

There’s also the Hot Sando with Curry (RM26): a ham, cheese, and egg toastie served with house-made Japanese curry for dipping. • 16. Rowan & Parsley Food Atelier

Rowan & Parsley Food Atelier is a 25-minute ride from the JB customs, but it’s well worth the journey if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The theme here is rather special; think industrial meets English garden, melded with rustic elements.

A must-try is the Big Brother Benedict (RM48+), a signature brunch dish comprising house-smoked beef, poached eggs, and Hollandaise sauce, on top of classic English muffins. If you’re not a brunch person, go for their mains instead.

Featuring al dente pasta swirled in a rich tomato cream sauce, and topped with fresh prawns, the Creamy Tomato Prawn Linguine (RM32+) is a delicious favourite. They do an excellent Cafe Latte (RM12+) too, if you’re hankering for a pick-me-up.

While M Patisserie has since relocated, patrons will be glad to know that they’re still a quick 10-minute drive from JB customs. This cafe is best known for their affordable high tea set, so they’re better suited for non-coffee lovers to check out.

The two-tiered set comes with a mix of savoury and sweet bites, finger sandwiches, scones, and a pot of Gryphon tea of your choice, so you can pinkies up with your friend. Nibble on cranberry scones, truffle egg mayo croissants, mini macarons, matcha cream puffs and more. FYI, the high tea is available for advanced booking via M Patisserie’s Instagram page.

Nimmies Pastry Cafe is arguably one of the most famous, Instagrammable cafe spots in JB, known for their gorgeous Parisian-inspired decor that blends raw industrial aesthetics with classic vintage elements. On the menu are scrumptious mains such as Arab Maghreb Shakshouka (RM29++) and Chicken Cutlet Green Pesto Tagliatelle (RM38++).

When I ask my friends for cafe recommendations in Johor Bahru, The FOUNDERS Cafe is often a top suggestion. With its lively ambience highlighted by potted plants, paintings, and vibrant murals, it’s no wonder the cafe is always crowded regardless of the time of day.

The aesthetic cafe serves hand-rolled bagels, locally inspired mains, pasta, pizzas, and quesadillas. However, their desserts are what truly stand out. Try their signature Pandan Gula Melaka Cake (RM15.90++) or the Hazelnut Dark Chocolate Brownie (RM14.90++), for a crisp brownie loaded with hazelnut chunks and topped with sea salt flakes, all served with a side of creamy vanilla ice cream.

For drinks, they offer sparkling mocktails starting from RM16.90++, along with coffee and tea. Standouts include the Iced Matcha Latte (RM14.50++), Iced Black Sesame Latte (RM12++), and Oat Milk Latte (RM16++).

Apart from their beautiful aesthetics, they’ve got tasty food, too, including the Wasabi Mayo Crabmeat Toast (RM34+), which features a brioche French toast, topped with fresh fruits, caramelised bananas, berries, and edible flowers, accompanied by a side of maple syrup.

Re Patisserie is a Korean-inspired dessert cafe just a 10-minute drive from JB customs. Its minimalist space, decked in wooden tones and rattan chairs, makes taking pictures a lot easier, thanks to the ample natural sunlight.

Their dessert menu changes from time to time, and during our visit, we tried the Happy Nut (RM23+)—this choux puff pastry is packed with pistachio cream and topped with chopped pistachio bits. The most aesthetic-looking dessert here was the Cloud Hill (RM29+), featuring a delicate fruit tart stacked with lots of cream and spiked with bourbon. Pair these sweet treats with one of their drinks such as the Iced Espresso Matcha (from RM17+), for an earthy beverage matcha fans are sure to appreciate.

Opened by the folks behind JWC The Factory 30, Brooos & Co by JWC is an office-themed cafe that’s a 16-minute drive from JB customs. Their popular drink, Please Chill (RM18++), combines milk, espresso, and pistachio paste, with crushed pistachio bits on the cup’s rim for added texture.

They also have alcoholic drinks on tap, including the File Finder (RM25++) and Drama Queen (RM20++). The former features a gin base with apple, lychee, and sea salt, while the latter has hints of guava, plum, and cranberry.

If you’d like some food to accompany your tipples, order the JWC Tacos (RM50++ for three pieces). They are also available in three other flavours: Smoked Salmon (RM20++), Smoked Duck (RM17++), and Pulled Chicken (RM17++).

D’ Cafe‘s garden-themed space ticks all the boxes for a JB cafe worth revisiting with its convenient location, minimalist aesthetic, and delicious food. Their menu is extensive with a variety of brunch mains and desserts, such as Pulled Benny (RM30+) and Pot-a-tato Rosti (RM32+). It’s easy to see why the former is a crowd favourite, with its hearty combination of pulled chicken, poached egg, pickled cabbage, and creamy hollandaise on toast.

Located just a 10-minute drive from JB customs, Palates & Bagels By T.A.M’s Jalan Dhoby outlet opens from 8am, making it a perfect breakfast stop. Choose from their signature bagels: Original Bagel (RM6++), Parmesan Cheese Bagel (RM7++), and Flavoured (RM8++).

Flavoured bagels come with toppings such as Purple Sweet Potato, Thai Chilli Paste, Garlic Confit & Rosemary and more. For a more substantial meal, try their savoury bagels. There’s the adorably named Mario (RM32.90++), packed with truffle cream cheese, cucumber, mushrooms, fresh salad, and sliced cheddar.

Another great JB cafe that serves up tasty breakfast is Pacific Kopi, known for their Nanyang-style coffee and Malaysian brekkie staples. They’ve got three locations: Jalan Dhoby, Sutera Utama, and R&F Mall.

FYI, their Jalan Dhoby outlet is only a 10-minute drive from the customs! A popular item here is the Pacific Nasi Lemak Chicken Tender (RM14.90++), featuring fluffy coconut rice paired with crispy fried chicken, ikan bilis, peanuts, poppadom crisps, and sambal chilli. Padi Kopitiam isn’t exactly a kopitiam; it’s a nostalgic cafe offering a variety of local Malaysian dishes. Their standout item is the Padi Snowy Polo Bun.

Priced at RM6.50++ per piece or RM23.90++ for four, this milky treat is crisp on the outside and uber-fluffy on the inside. The eatery also serves kolo mee: Black Kolo Mee with Wantan (RM14.90++).

Another JB cafe nestled in Mount Austin is Cam Tea & Ember Cafe, a Chinese-style teahouse with wooden accents and camping-style tables. Priced at RM36.80, the Roast & Revel Craft and DIY Milk Tea Experience is a must-try. It allows you to brew your tea and enjoy it with snacks such as Glutinous Rice Cake, Black Sesame Balls, and Green Bean Cookies.

For something refreshing, try the Gardenia Coconut Claypot Iced Milk Tea w Homemade Grass Jelly & Toppings (RM20.80) instead, which comes with chewy lychee mochi and other toppings, including Peach Popping Balls and Sweet Red Bean. Keep an eye out for a blue door symbol against a yellow wall in Mount Austin, where you’ll find The Blue Door Coffee House, a must-visit for all things pistachio and matcha-flavoured. Upon entering the hidden cafe, you’ll be met with a spacious dining area featuring a queen-sized bed in the middle, which also houses the cashier and drink counter.
