Finger food made from pretzels: Who would have thought what all is contained in a pretzel?

Divided into small pieces, combined with spicy ingredients, baked with topping or filled as a mini sandwich, the familiar pretzel pastry becomes surprisingly varied finger food.

Have you ever considered serving pretzels and lye sticks not just in the classic way, but also as small skewers, sandwiches, or Mediterranean appetizers? This creates uncomplicated snacks, especially for parties, brunches, or buffets, that taste familiar yet look completely different.

Pretzels already have a strong, slightly salty flavor and therefore don't need many ingredients to be interesting. Whether mini pretzels, pretzel sticks, or regular pretzels: cheese, vegetables, sausage, herbs, or Mediterranean ingredients create endless new combinations.

Pretzel-based finger food can be combined in many ways.

Whether rustic and hearty, Mediterranean and fresh, or crispy and baked: pretzels and lye can be transformed into surprisingly versatile little bites. And it doesn't always have to be complicated recipes – often just a few ingredients and a creative combination are enough to turn pretzels and lye sticks into varied finger food.

Pretzel skewers with kabanos sausage, cheese and gherkin

For these pretzel skewers, the pretzels are cut into bite-sized pieces and alternately threaded onto wooden skewers with mini kabanos sausages, cheese cubes, and small gherkins. This creates a savory snack that combines different textures.

The salty brine meets savory sausage, mild cheese, and the crisp acidity of the cucumber. These finger food skewers are especially well-suited for a buffet because they are already portioned and can be eaten without cutlery. For a finger food party, the combination can also be easily expanded with other ingredients.

Flammkuchen pretzels from the oven

The classic pretzel becomes even more surprising with a creamy topping. For tarte flambée pretzels, thawed frozen pretzels are brushed with a mixture of sour cream, egg, cheese, and spring onions, then baked. The pretzels thus acquire a savory topping reminiscent of a small tarte flambée.

Ingredients for 10 tarte flambée pretzels:

  • 10 frozen pretzels
  • 200 g sour cream
  • 2 spring onions
  • 130 g Speck
  • 150 g Emmental cheese
  • 2 Owner
  • salt and pepper
  • Slice the spring onions into thin rings. Grate the Emmental cheese if necessary.
  • Place sour cream, spring onions, bacon, grated cheese, and eggs in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Then season with salt and pepper.
  • Place the frozen pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them thaw for about 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C fan-forced.
  • Spread the sour cream mixture evenly over the thawed pretzels.
  • Bake the topped pretzels in the oven for about 15 minutes, until the topping is golden brown.
  • Allow to cool briefly after baking and then serve warm or cold.

Tip: The salt packet that comes with many packages of frozen pretzels can also be used to season the sour cream mixture.

Those who prefer vegetarian pretzel finger food can omit the bacon and add, for example, bell peppers or zucchini. Served warm from the oven, the baked pretzels are just as suitable for a cozy evening as they are chilled for a buffet.

Mini sandwiches and burgers made from pretzel dough

Mini pretzels are also suitable as a small sandwich base. For this, the pieces are cut horizontally and combined with different fillings. A version with ham and cheese remains classic, while tomato, mozzarella, and basil provide Mediterranean flavors.

Small bites with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, or even cheese sandwiches with melted topping, are also possible. These small pastries are sturdier than very soft sandwich bread and are therefore ideal as convenient finger food. However, moist fillings should be used sparingly to prevent the pastries from becoming soggy.

Secured with a toothpick, these become pretty mini sandwiches that can be taken directly from the plate. This makes them particularly suitable as finger food for guests.

Antipasti skewers with a savory pretzel base

For a more Mediterranean flavor, combine pretzels with mini mozzarella, olives, salami, roasted peppers, artichokes, and basil. A piece of pretzel between each of the ingredients provides a characteristic contrast.

These antipasti skewers add color to the buffet and are particularly well-suited as part of a mixed pretzel finger food platter. The various ingredients can be arranged in a variety of ways, so that each bite looks and tastes slightly different.

Pretzel dumplings as unusual finger food

Even older pretzels don't have to end up in the trash. They can be used to make small pretzel dumplings, which can then also be used as part of finger food skewers.

One inspiration for this is small pretzel dumplings combined with sausages, radishes, cucumbers, and onions. Arranged on small skewers, this creates a rustic, Bavarian-inspired option for a buffet. The idea beautifully demonstrates how far pretzel-based appetizers can deviate from the classic pretzel snack.

  • 6 pretzels (approx. 480 g)
  • 5 tablespoons rapeseed oil
  • 2 tsp sea salt
  • a little freshly grated nutmeg
  • 6 tbsp Soy flour
  • ca. 400 ml Sojadrink
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 4 vegan sausages
  • some rapeseed oil for frying
  • radish
  • Pickles
  • 2 red onions
  • Optionally, mini salt pretzels, cherry tomatoes or olives for decoration.
  • bamboo skewers
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 tsp medium-hot mustard
  • 2 pinches of sugar
  • freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 4 TL vegan white balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • Cut the pretzels into small pieces and place them in a large bowl. Peel and finely dice the onions and prepare them together with the parsley.
  • Mix the soy flour with the soy milk and let it soak briefly. Then add the pretzel pieces, onions, parsley, rapeseed oil, salt, and a little nutmeg, and mix everything into a moldable dough.
  • Form the mixture into small, bite-sized dumplings. Make sure the portions remain compact and will fit well on the skewers later.
  • Cook the dumplings in gently simmering water until firm. Then remove and let cool briefly.
  • Cut the vegan sausages into small pieces and fry them in a little rapeseed oil until browned on all sides. Cut the radishes, gherkins, and red onions into suitable pieces.
  • For the vinaigrette, finely chop the red onion and mix with mustard, sugar, pepper, salt, parsley, white balsamic vinegar and rapeseed oil.
  • To serve, place a small pretzel dumpling, a piece of vegan sausage, vegetables and a mini salt pretzel on a skewer.
  • Arrange the finished skewers on a large platter and, if desired, drizzle with a little vinaigrette or serve it separately.

Tip: For a varied finger food platter, the skewers can be arranged in different ways. The small pretzel dumplings look particularly nice together with the red onions, radishes, and cucumbers, as the different colors visually break up the rustic pretzel pastry.

Even more ideas for the finger food platter

Mini pretzels can also be used to make small burgers with cheese and vegetables. Camembert with cranberries provides a sweet and savory contrast, while cream cheese and herbs offer a fresh option. Ham and cheese work just as well, as do pesto and mozzarella.

It is precisely this mix that makes finger food with pretzels so appealing: alongside savory combinations, vegetarian and Mediterranean appetizers also find their place. This allows a single platter to cater to a wide range of tastes.

Conclusion: Lye-based baked goods can do much more than just pretzels

Whether skewers, sandwiches, toasted pretzels, or antipasti bites – finger food made from pretzels offers numerous possibilities for creative party snacks. The familiar lye provides an aromatic base that goes well with both classic and Mediterranean ingredients.

When preparing finger food for guests, it's perfectly acceptable to think beyond the classic butter pretzel. With just a few ingredients, pretzels, lye sticks, and mini lye pastries can be transformed into bite-sized treats that work just as well on a buffet as they do at brunch or a social evening.
