Mexico is named the world's number 1 gastronomic destination in the 2026 global ranking

Our country won the award, beating out other nations such as Spain, Italy, India, and Japan.

The important culinary heritage, comprised of street food, haute cuisine, ingredients from each region, as well as sustainability practices, beverages, and the experience lived throughout the Mexican Republic, earned the highest global award.

In a recent evaluation conducted by the editorial ranking "Travel And Tour World," our country stood out on the list that assessed 50 destinations around the world. The competition also tested the food and destinations of countries such as Japan, India, Spain, and Italy.

The list was studied, discussed, analyzed, and compiled by expert editorial writers from this prestigious magazine. This year's ranking considers Mexico the best gastronomic destination in the world, showcasing the extraordinary strength of its culinary cultures.

Furthermore, it's a way to recognize centuries-old traditions, local ingredients, regional diversity, and the global influence of gastronomy. This Top 50 list also highlights incredible culinary destinations in Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Africa.

The list includes the most important gastronomic capitals

The list also considered an analysis of vibrant street food centers, wine destinations, coastal seafood regions, spice-rich cultures, emerging culinary powerhouses, legendary gastronomic capitals, and island cuisines.

On these incredible and spectacular journeys, food is no longer just a footnote, but an essential part of the experience. By 2026, travelers are no longer simply looking for monuments or ruins to explore; they are seeking flavorful memories, tradition, local ingredients, and the alchemy of taste.

A tribute to the nations where gastronomy is an edible heritage

This year's list of the 50 best gastronomic destinations seeks to pay tribute to those nations where gastronomy is a fundamental part of the heritage, where respect for tradition goes hand in hand with innovation, responsible tourism and sustainable sourcing.

The article states that "to truly know a country, you must first taste it." It details that Mexico City ranks number one for its impressive culinary offerings, including Michelin-starred restaurants and dishes like quesadillas, tamales, and tacos.

Ten Mexican destinations were evaluated

Oaxaca offers its mezcal, mole, and succulent tlayudas. In Guadalajara, you can enjoy its flavorful birria, tortas ahogadas, and tequila. Mérida boasts its signature lime soup and cochinita pibil. Meanwhile, Puebla is famous for its mole poblano, cemitas, markets, and flavors.

The list continues with Baja California, whose menu includes fish tacos, ceviche, and wines. In San Miguel de Allende, the barbacoa combined with haute cuisine is a must-try. In Cancún, you can savor Caribbean seafood and lobster. Tulum serves its fresh tacos and cochinita pibil.

It's important to note that this "Top 50 Food Destinations Around the World" list is not an official award or a global scientific analysis. It's an editorial ranking by a renowned travel magazine, which evaluates trips and experiences around the world.

The award, according to the publishing house, reflects the opinion and discernment it made regarding: gastronomic offerings, beverages, sustainability, traveler experiences, heritage, diversity, ingredients, cultural richness and ancestral traditions.

Some of the other nations that were included in this distinction are: India, the United States, Japan, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, China, Indonesia, France, Peru, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Argentina, Lebanon, Brazil, Turkey, Colombia, Morocco, to name a few.
